After years
of research and development, and tests by general aviation pilots in Alaska and air transport carriers in the Ohio River Valley, the FAA in 2005 declared ADS — B to be a safe radar alternative and pegged the technology as a crucial component
of the agency's plans to by 2020 upgrade the national
airspace system — a program known as Next -
Generation Air Transportation System.
The FAA continually strives to improve operations in the National
Airspace System (NAS) and ensure the vitality
of the U.S. economy through the transformation
of our civil air traffic system with the Next
Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).
