Our life experiences exert a profound influence on how we age and can even alter the ways
genes function without changing the underlying DNA sequence; these genetic changes are called epigenetic traits.
Her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of David Sweatt, the chair of the Neurobiology department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, focused on the emerging science of epigenetics, the study of changes in
gene function without a change in DNA, something that has only recently come to the fore of neuroscience.

What all these have in common is that,
without any central control, individual units (
genes, cells neurons or workers) respond to simple, local information, in ways that allow the whole system (cells, brains, organisms or colonies) to
function: the appropriate number of units performs each activity at the appropriate time.
Three children in this family were born
without fully
functioning ATF6
genes.
Consider what that means:
Without a mutation to the DNA code itself, the attached methyl groups cause long - term, heritable change in
gene function.
The difficulties are well illustrated by last month's rejection of a patent application in the US, by the Institutes of Health, for DNA sequences
without knowledge of the
function of the
gene.
(Because of the strong sequence similarities between the two
genes, the scientists have not yet been able to turn off one
without the other, so differences between their
functions are still unclear.)
Yet they would be nearly impossible to create
without genetic engineering used to evaluate
gene function, said Nora Lapitan, a wheat geneticist at Colorado State University.
Through the combination of linkage data and exome sequencing, they have identified a deletion or loss of a single base in the
gene encoding STAG3, which results in a prematurely truncated protein
without function.
They took short pieces of RNA which are able to turn off the
function of specific
genes, attached them to highly concentrated viruses, and then, using ultrasound to guide the needle
without damaging surrounding tissue, they injected the viruses into the sacs of mouse embryos.
They also want to be able to insert more subtle mutations, such as those reported in HIV - resistant individuals, which could alter cell
function just enough to confer resistance but
without fully deactivating the
gene and impeding cell
function.
Without these tools, scientists are less able to link specific
genes to cell behavior or determine how microbes interact within their environment and with one another — critical information for understanding how ocean ecosystems
function.
Researchers found that all 15 children with SMA1 treated with the
gene therapy were
functioning without any major disability or progression of their disease.
Once an organism can draw on two full sets of essentially the same
genes, it can begin «to de-evolve certain of the
genes in one set and adapt them to some other
function — importantly,
without compromising the
gene's original
function,» she says.
We included
genes with and
without a known
function in olfactory and vomeronasal signaling that cover the whole range of expression values observed (Table S1).
