With the AAdvantage card, you'll
get 10,000 Elite Qualifying Miles (
EQMs) every year that you spend at least $ 40,000 on the card.
In addition, with Platinum and Gold status you
get 4 500 - mile upgrades for every 12,500
EQMs earned during your membership year.
The $ 450 card, which includes Admirals Club access, requires you to spend a sizable $ 40,000 dollars in a year to
get 10,000
EQMs.
However, if you book those same 40,000 miles per year in business class on American, you would have only 40,000
EQM and 60,000 EQP (since you would
get 100 %
EQM and 1.5 EQP per mile).
You'll
get 10,000
EQMs every year that you spend at least $ 40,000 on the card.
Needing to grasp a higher Elite Status last fall, I took advantage of the 10,000
EQM for spending $ 3,000 in 3 months (promotion expired) and I also
got a 25,000 miles sign up bonus.
$ 40,000 was way too much spend to put on this card just to
get the 10,000
EQM (which is why I haven't done it in recent years) and most of the other worthwhile benefits I either
get with my airline status or with other, cheaper, credit cards that I hold.
I've held this card since it was first introduced and I originally
got it, primarily, for the 10,000 Elite Qualifying Miles (
EQM) benefit.
Still,
getting 2 cents per point opens up many great opportunities for economy flights or cheap business class flights and can result in some very cheap tickets to
get across the country and you
get to earn reward points or
EQMs for the flights.
10,000 miles will almost
get you halfway to the 25,000
EQMs needed for Gold status.
Putting down all the possible flights we'll be taking into a demand schedule will help us know how many miles we'll need to
get to
EQM - Zero.
You never know — you may end up
getting triple
EQMs on those segments!
So currently if I buy a $ 450 LAX - DCA ticket (2,300 miles flown) I
get the 4,600
EQMs r / t + 4,600 bonus miles for being platinum or EXP.
Now they tell me that they are changing the rules and I will only
get 0.5
EQM?
I am struggling to work out how many
EQMs and reward miles I will
get for my mixed Carrier flights next year.
And if you fly partner airline you
get less
EQM's than before.
Not only am I excited to
get to spend a few days in Hawaii after a whirlwind week and a half in Australia but I'll also
get to fly a new airline, plus since I paid for that ticket in business class ($ 2,500) I'll also earn AAdvantage miles and
EQMs, which I need to re-qualify for Executive Platinum this year.
Now, in order to
get Executive Platinum status, you have to
get 100,000
EQMs and 12,000 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQD).

You
get one elite - qualifying mile for each $ 10 of net purchases beyond that — probably not what you meant by «a reward card that will earn
EQMs from purchases.»
EQMS are a waste without spend but you can
get a ton of them from flying a trip making the EQD bonus better imo.
There's no pro-rating; you must cross the 12,500 -
EQM threshold to
get the upgrades.
