Because what we want for our
books (or,
at least, I do) is approbation from a mainstream audience — people who typically read rather than
get paid to
review.
I
get through
at least one a week, often more, and I
review these
books for pleasure, usually on Amazon, sometimes on Goodreads (a site that's hailed as social media for readers, but to be honest I find it a frustratingly clunky site so don't go on there that much — and as it's now owned by Amazon, it may only be a matter of time before my Amazon
reviews are accessible from Goodreads anyway).
A focus of your
book launch is going to be to
get at least ten
reviews in the first few days so that random visitors to your Amazon page will
get that social proof they need to buy the
book.
When I wrote Self - Printed just under a year ago, the problem plaguing self - published authors looking to
get their
book reviewed was what I called The Mean Problem, whereby self - published authors bristled
at the idea of «giving
books away for free» to reviewers.
When I did a free
book giveaway for «Inner Demons» last year
at Goodreads, I was surprised when I
got a bad
review by one of the people who signed to win the
book.
The
review on your
book will be shared on our social media profiles and will
get high exposure
at an international level.
It could take them six months to
get to your
book, they may change their mind and not
review your
book at all, OR they may write the
review tomorrow and forget to tell you.

So, while it's true that if you print 3000
books you'll
get a better price per unit, I recommend starting with 100
at a time and work out the tweaks: correct typos, add an endorsement or
review, maybe
get an award on the front of your
book.
Out of those, you should
get at least 10
reviews (make sure to ask for
reviews in the back of the
book!).
By bringing it up to them
at the back of your
book, you can increase the chances of
getting a
review from those who make it to the end.
Honestly, it will always sting for a nanosecond when I read about authors winning awards that I can't begin to hope to win as an indie, or heading off on
book tours, or
getting picked to speak
at big events, or receiving glowing
reviews from notable publications, or hobnobbing with other big name authors.

Conversely, when I looked
at free
reviews, mostly I found people just trying to
get free
books and, for lack of a better word, something of an unofficial circle jerk.
I can't
get the
book posted to any major indie distribution site without
at least five
reviews.
At the same time, the whole reason they want a
review is to
get a good one that will help them sell
books and
get something back for their own investment of time and labor!
How to
get those
reviews is a subject for a different column, but if you don't have
at least that many
reviews, most of the big sites, like Pixel of Ink, E-Reader News Today or Free Kindle
Books and Tips won't ever pick you up.
Of course paying for consumer
reviews is bad practice, but we

book... I said it was awesome, but not for beginners as the title and summary suggested.
This is the company, elsevier, with spectacular profit rates, whch
gets its material (papers,
books) which have mostly been produced
at public expense (university salaries, public research grants), do very little actual editorial work (one usually has to supply papers charts etc «print ready»),
get academic reviewers to
review the
books and papers free of charge (well, paid for by universities or they do it in free time), depend on journal editors whose time is paid for by (generally publicly funded) universities, then sells the journals to the same universities, sometimes for subscription prices in the thousands of dollars.
This way, authors can
get their
books into the hands of many readers
at once (on Lovelybooks, for instance, you can only give away 20
books at a time), and collect a good number of
reviews before they launch their
book.
