It's a lot different than
getting ebooks from libraries where you can only checkout so many at one time, and then they automatically expire after 2 - 3 weeks.
Previously if you wanted to
get ebooks from your library you had to download everything to a computer and then sideload the files using Adobe Digital Editions and a USB cable — rather inconvenient for a wireless device.

Because when I think about what other thing of value that
libraries have that could potentially be traded to publishers in order to
get an equivalent set of value back
from them in the way of
ebook rights, I keep coming back to one thing:
What Amazon
gets out of this transaction is data, which is also what they
get out of allowing Kindle users to borrow OverDrive
ebooks from the
libraries.
If patrons stop looking to
libraries to supply
ebooks because
libraries can't
get ebooks from a publisher or can only afford a few very expensive
ebooks that have long hold lines, then the patron will look elsewhere.The choice is to buy
from the publisher or download illegally.
What we really need is
libraries nationwide to
get together to negotiate prices for
ebooks directly
from publishers.
The main thought is that authors and publishers will
get royalties when an
ebook is loaned out
from public
libraries, and that will be the deciding factor whether they will embrace a government initiative.

It might seem counter-intuitive to the indie author desperate for sales to offer an
eBook as a free read, but the exposure you can

get this nifty list of suggested books and
from those suggested books I've discovered authors I've never heard of... and... many of those authors don't have books in my local
library... I feel like a whole new literary world has opened up for me!
