sales of physical books, it's negotiating
for how big a cut it

ebooks.
And there's also the fact that looking at unit
sales is possibly misleading — if you sell 1,000 copies of a book at $ 1 each, you might be
getting way more unit
sales than an
ebook going
for $ 10 each, but the revenue will still be low.
It might seem counter-intuitive to the indie author desperate
for sales to offer an
eBook as a free read, but the exposure you can
get from having your
eBook available
for borrowing in a library is immense.
At least until major houses
get rid of non-compete clauses, pay higher royalties
for ebook sales, and limit their contracts to a set number of years.
If you're willing to give up the above
for a potentially higher
sales volume, then here are the five main services at your disposal,
for free, to
get your book onto Amazon.com as an
ebook or paperback.
However,
for general publishers, with titles that DO appeal to large foreign publishers and who rely on these
sales, the issue of
ebook rights WILL
get trickier.
The rest is spread very unevenly as follows: 25 % in second - hand and car - boot
sale locations (Ravenbooks features here and I suspect in 2010 will feature even more) which is made up almost exclusively of out of print and pre-2000 books, the last 5 % or so
gets spent fairly randomly everywhere from good independents, to local shops with self published titles and random online direct purchases and
ebooks (I'm still primary print and suspect I will always be so, despite a belief and passion
for digital text).
