To be honest, I didn't even know what had to be done before to
get miles redeposited aside from paying the standard redeposit fee but $ 125 doesn't sound horrific.
Some carriers charge up to $ 150 to make changes or to
get miles redeposited after cancelling, while others offer that service for free.
Unfortunately, you can't make any changes or
get your miles redeposited if you redeem an award seat at a saver rate.

However, in eight years of planning vacations, I have had many leave periods changed or deployment dates changed, and I have never had no problem
getting an airline to fully refund my ticket or
redeposit my
miles from an award ticket with no fee.
That is less of an issue for top tier elites as you
get free
redeposit of
miles.
To cancel an award outright and
redeposit the
miles, I'll call the airline on your behalf and
get the work done for you, all while trying to save you the most
miles and prevent you from
getting over charged on cancellation fees.
I updated the post to make this clearer, basically you have to fax it in and then the
miles get redeposited so nowhere near as good as 10,000
miles just being deposited unfortunately.
