We had been
sleeping in different bedrooms for over a year now,
under the excuse that I didn't want
to wake him when the
baby got up
to nurse.
Nursing, changing diaper, changing spit - up clothes (
baby's and yours), made a cup of tea, spent an hour trying
to get in 10 minutes of Tummy Time so the
baby won't be a dolt, spent 40 minutes
getting the
baby down for a nap which ended up lasting 20 minutes, made lunch and spilled half of it on the
baby's head, clothing changes all around, nursing, found now - cold cup of untouched tea and drank it anyway, more nursing,
baby falls asleep on you but wakes up if you try
to move him so you just stay slumped on the couch with one leg forward and the other bent uncomfortably
under you because this kid needs
to sleep or we'll all diiieeee, nursing, realize you forgot about the weekly mothers» meeting which was your only adult outing dammit and now who will be your friend?
But I have a hunch that, especially in young
babies under six months, cold milk could cause gas or tummy troubles, and warm milk just seems more comforting and soothing when trying
to get your
baby to sleep.
New mothers are
under increasing social pressure
to enforce routine on their
babies, including
getting babies to sleep through the night.
It may be hard
to imagine before
baby is born, but even the simple act of
getting up
to fill a water cup can be a bit of a challenge when you're stuck
under a
sleeping baby.
This can happen for several days in a row before you finally
get the
baby to sleep AND have the energy
to stand
under the lukewarm water for a few minutes.
When you're traveling with a
baby under the age of one, your goal is
to simply
get there safely, make sure your child has a place
to sleep and eat comfortably,
get around and
get home just as easily.
And others simply wrapped it around their
baby's wrist or ankle at night, convinced that it was the reason their fussy
baby was
sleeping better, and that the
baby wouldn't be able
to figure out how
get it of since it was
under their clothes or something.
