gifted education research, some of which has existed since the 1920's, parents and teachers can deal with the affective, cognitive, and instructional
issues of

There are three key
issues that are crucial to the successful integration of
gifted education theory in arts instruction: affective, cognitive, and instructional.

In 1972, Sidney Marland, the U.S. commissioner of
education,
issued a report that stated that only 4 percent of
gifted children were receiving any kind of special service.
While there is a clear need to increase the participation of minority students in
gifted education programs, there is an equally important need to focus on
issues of achievement and underachievement.
The U. S. Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) recently
issued the first national report on the
education of
gifted children since 1972.
Indeed, there are few
issues in
gifted education in which the discrepancy between what research reveals, and what classroom teachers believe, is so remarked.
My «fairest» interpretation of the current albeit controversial research surrounding this particular
issue is that bias does not exist across teacher - level estimates, but it certainly occurs when teachers are non-randomly assigned highly homogenous sets of students who are
gifted, who are English Language Learners (ELLs), who are enrolled in special
education programs, who disproportionately represent racial minority groups, who disproportionately come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and who have been retained in grade prior.

Evidence - based practices that inform the teacher preparation and programming standards in
gifted education relate to assessment, curriculum, instruction, and grouping
issues, all of which are embedded within the CCSS.
Teachers of
gifted and high - potential students also should be mindful of the importance of providing conceptual units of study that foster interdisciplinary thinking, examination of complex
issues, problem finding, and problem solving to stimulate discussion, debate, reasoning, and related skills of persuasion, which are progressively targeted as learners move from K - 6 through secondary
education.

gifted education and share information in areas such as common core state standards; administration and supervision; autism spectrum disorders; emotional and behavior disorders and supports; instructional strategies for math, reading, and science; policy; technology; and response to intervention.
