Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and other elements
of the world... Now it is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an unbeliever to hear a Christian, presumably
giving the meaning
of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics... How are they going to believe these books in matters concerning the resurrection
of the dead, the
hope of eternal life, and the kingdom
of heaven?
Art. 7
of the Decree on the Missions says in so many words that God can
give in ways known to himself the grace
of faith and thus the
hope and love necessary for
eternal life also to those whom the actual message
of the gospel has not reached.
The connection
of Christ's resurrection with our
hope of eternal life is understood when we see that it is Jesus, the man who
gave his
life trusting the divine love, whom we know as the risen and present Christ.
And while we would
hope and expect that people who have
eternal life will
live lives of increasing holiness and obedience, the fact that God has
given us freedom means that a
life of good works is not guaranteed.
The ultimate reality upon which our
hope depends is therefore the
eternal truth and power
of God, breaking into the flow
of historical events, qualifying it, transforming it, yet always to be understood as
giving meaning to
life through its relation to that which is beyond the time form
of the world process.
In the last chapter we explained that the «resurrection
of the dead» expresses the
hope that the whole
of a man's
life from beginning to end will be raised before the divine Judgment Seat and be accepted by God as possessing something
of value which will
give it an
eternal meaning.

The bodily resurrection
of Christ is basic to Paul's understanding
of eternal life, but this very concrete faith that
gives rise to his
hope that we will join Christ in a resurrection like his becomes less and less comprehensible the more one reflects on the eternity it promises.
We admit we were once lost without
hope in darkness and sin, and only by the crucified, dead, buried, and resurrected
life of Jesus Christ have we been
given light, a new,
eternal life, new
hope, and the righteous way to
live.

It would technically allow
eternal life, should we have infinite «replacement parts»; the challenge is making sure all these «parts» work together and we have the «least» amount
of «repairing» going on to try to minimize «excessive invasion
