Given the number of
ways that things can go wrong with continued CO2 emissions (from
ocean acidfication and sea level rise
to simple warming, shifting precipitation patterns, release of buried carbon in perma - frost, and the possibility of higher climate sensitivities — which seem
to be needed
to account for glacial / inter-glacial transitions), crossing our fingers and carrying on with BAU seems nothing short of crazy
to me.
Monthly

The interesting thing from a scientific perspective is that specifying the surface temperature in this region seems
to anchor the coupled atmosphere /
ocean circulations in a
way that not only
gives a better simulation of global average surface temperature, but also provides better simulations of the variability of key regional circulation features.
fanciful — has it ever been proposed that
ocean heat uptake during interglacials might be the planets
way of preparing for the next ice age, when the
oceans give up the heat
to preserve continuity of life on the surface — I know, sounds a bit link an intelligent Gaia mythology, but doesn't the notion of synergy suggest the possibility?
The IPCC has
given inadequate attention

And then — still at sea — ships could spread that vital trace element iron across the

Finally, it is one in which commercial whaling, including that being cast as scientific in nature,
gives way — once and for always —
to the lucrative and sustainable enterprise of whale watching, which, properly conducted, promises
to bring benefits both
to humankind as well as
to whales and other species inhabiting the world's
oceans.
Antarctic snow, by the
way, is THICKER than Arctic snow, so I wonder how this might figure in,
given the HUGE size of the Antarctica continental land mass, compared
to the relatively small size of the Arctic
ocean.
To point out just a couple of things: — oceans warming slower (or cooling slower) than lands on long - time trends is absolutely normal, because water is more difficult both to warm or to cool (I mean, we require both a bigger heat flow and more time); at the contrary, I see as a non-sense theory (made by some serrist, but don't know who) that oceans are storing up heat, and that suddenly they will release such heat as a positive feedback: or the water warms than no heat can be considered ad «stored» (we have no phase change inside oceans, so no latent heat) or oceans begin to release heat but in the same time they have to cool (because they are losing heat); so, I don't feel strange that in last years land temperatures for some series (NCDC and GISS) can be heating up while oceans are slightly cooling, but I feel strange that they are heating up so much to reverse global trend from slightly negative / stable to slightly positive; but, in the end, all this is not an evidence that lands» warming is led by UHI (but, this effect, I would not exclude it from having a small part in temperature trends for some regional area, but just small); both because, as writtend, it is normal to have waters warming slower than lands, and because lands» temperatures are often measured in a not so precise way (despite they continue to give us a global uncertainity in TT values which is barely the instrumental's one)-- but, to point out, HadCRU and MSU of last years (I mean always 2002 - 2006) follow much better waters» temperatures trend; — metropolis and larger cities temperature trends actually show an increase in UHI effect, but I think the sites are few, and the covered area is very small worldwide, so the global effect is very poor (but it still can be sensible for regional effects); but I would not run out a small warming trend for airport measurements due mainly to three things: increasing jet planes traffic, enlarging airports (then more buildings and more asphalt — if you follow motor sports, or simply live in a town / city, you will know how easy they get very warmer than air during day, and how much it can slow night - time cooling) and overall having airports nearer to cities (if not becoming an area inside the city after some decade of hurban growth, e.g. Milan - Linate); — I found no point about UHI in towns and villages; you will tell me they are not large cities; but, in comparison with 20-40-60 years ago when they were «countryside», many small towns and villages have become part of larger hurban areas (at least in Europe and Asia) so examining just larger cities would not be enough in my opinion to get a full view of UHI effect (still remembering that it has a small global effect: we can say many matters are due to UHI instead of GW, maybe even that a small part of measured GW is due to UHI, and that GW measurements are not so precise to make us able to make good analisyses and predictions, but not that GW is due to UHI

to warm or
to cool (I mean, we require both a bigger heat flow and more time); at the contrary, I see as a non-sense theory (made by some serrist, but don't know who) that oceans are storing up heat, and that suddenly they will release such heat as a positive feedback: or the water warms than no heat can be considered ad «stored» (we have no phase change inside oceans, so no latent heat) or oceans begin to release heat but in the same time they have to cool (because they are losing heat); so, I don't feel strange that in last years land temperatures for some series (NCDC and GISS) can be heating up while oceans are slightly cooling, but I feel strange that they are heating up so much to reverse global trend from slightly negative / stable to slightly positive; but, in the end, all this is not an evidence that lands» warming is led by UHI (but, this effect, I would not exclude it from having a small part in temperature trends for some regional area, but just small); both because, as writtend, it is normal to have waters warming slower than lands, and because lands» temperatures are often measured in a not so precise way (despite they continue to give us a global uncertainity in TT values which is barely the instrumental's one)-- but, to point out, HadCRU and MSU of last years (I mean always 2002 - 2006) follow much better waters» temperatures trend; — metropolis and larger cities temperature trends actually show an increase in UHI effect, but I think the sites are few, and the covered area is very small worldwide, so the global effect is very poor (but it still can be sensible for regional effects); but I would not run out a small warming trend for airport measurements due mainly to three things: increasing jet planes traffic, enlarging airports (then more buildings and more asphalt — if you follow motor sports, or simply live in a town / city, you will know how easy they get very warmer than air during day, and how much it can slow night - time cooling) and overall having airports nearer to cities (if not becoming an area inside the city after some decade of hurban growth, e.g. Milan - Linate); — I found no point about UHI in towns and villages; you will tell me they are not large cities; but, in comparison with 20-40-60 years ago when they were «countryside», many small towns and villages have become part of larger hurban areas (at least in Europe and Asia) so examining just larger cities would not be enough in my opinion to get a full view of UHI effect (still remembering that it has a small global effect: we can say many matters are due to UHI instead of GW, maybe even that a small part of measured GW is due to UHI, and that GW measurements are not so precise to make us able to make good analisyses and predictions, but not that GW is due to UHI

to reduce ice concentrations in an area of very thick ice in the high Arctic.

It also
gives us a degree of seperateness / independence between
ocean and solar cycling that goes a long
way to explaining the correlation problems which would then most likely arise from phasing differences between solar and oceanic variations.
Tipping point-wise, a big one that gets little attention is an increase in thermocline depth, important because it will
give the T increase long - term persistence (and I suspect would be one
way for
ocean CO2 absorption
to decrease).
In the end, the antics of the
ocean and WV, which may indeed have the sun as the conductor, far outweigh that of co2 though an underlying signal may be there, which
given the
way temperatures bounce up and down in response
to the enso, may be no greater than noise Peace out
I believe the IPCC plans all call for a black box solution where we develop a technology
to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or
ocean to drive the CO2 levels or
to at least slow the rise of CO2 and
give us more time
to make fundamental changes in the
way we live
to limit global warming
to some arbitrary level.
Given the significant interspecific differences in the sensitivity of reef fishes
to CO2 - induced acidification [67], not all species will be affected the same
way by future
ocean acidification, probably resulting in shifts in community structure favouring more tolerant species.
By the
way,
to give a sense of scale, the IPCC estimates that the
oceans have already risen about 0.2 meters in the last 130 years or so:
Walking beside the
