Some were able to self - insure through mutual - aid cooperative societies or unions; the less fortunate had to fall back on welfare, grudgingly given by those who blamed the victim.

And a failed innovation might be expensive, and hurt one's reputation, and make one unpopular, which is not the way to get re-elected as a bencher, or become a judge, or get some other government appointment on a law society recommendation, or demonstrably embellish one's career as a successful, popular lawyer giving back to the profession the benefit of one's experience.

On the positive side, someone who believes in giving back to society is likely to enjoy a far more successful career in the not - for - profit or public sectors, a person with strong family values may prefer a job which allows them time flexibility, whilst an individual who values structure and clarity is more likely to flourish in the closely defined hierarchy of a large public company than in the multi-tasked, frantic environment typical of many start ups and small businesses.

The financial goal is to accumulate enough income to give back to society at large on a grand scale by way of donations to institutions that provide priceless services such as education, health, and innovation that enhances the overall quality of life for all.
