Better construction may have started with the family together and then
giving little flashbacks into their days, or maybe had it been structured like a Christmas anthology film we could give our full attention to each story in its entirety.

BEST SCENE: The
flashbacks that start off the movie are a charming way of
giving our characters a
little history without overwhelming us with dialogue.
The director has a solid handle on tone, but
gives a slightly chocolate box feel to the rest of the film, and perhaps stretches out the Australian
flashbacks a
little far — they do start to feel repetitive by the end of the two - hour running time.
The
flashback scenes of his past do
little more than to establish that he knows how to run fast, and it does set up some parallels for his time in prison, but they
give practically no insight into his personality.
