Here's my uneducated question — while I respect Gavin's comments about not abusing the science, it seems to me that many measurable indicators of climate change are (to the extent I can tell) occurring / progressing / worsening faster than predicted by most models, whether we're talking about atmospheric CO2 levels, arctic
ice melting,
glacial retreat, etc..
In particular, there are «slow» responses to the imbalance that are seen in the
glacial record — CO2 and methane increase with a slow lag as temperature rises in response to the orbital changes, and the albedo effect that reduces incoming sunlight decreases as the
ice melts, also with a slow lag.
Once the
ice reaches the equator, the equilibrium climate is significantly colder than what would initiate
melting at the equator, but if CO2 from geologic emissions build up (they would, but very slowly — geochemical processes provide a negative feedback by changing atmospheric CO2 in response to climate changes, but this is generally very slow, and thus can not prevent faster changes from faster external forcings) enough, it can initiate
melting — what happens then is a runaway in the opposite direction (until the
ice is completely gone — the extreme warmth and CO2 amount at that point, combined with left - over
glacial debris available for chemical weathering, will draw CO2 out of the atmosphere, possibly allowing some
ice to return).
The energy taken from the system to cause the observed
glacial melting worldwide, thinning and shrinkage of Arctic sea
ice,
melting collapsed Antarctic iceshelves etc. must be «hidden» in the meltwater, unrecordable by themometer.

glacial isostatic adjustment models, and an ensemble of GCMs to inform the ocean dynamic contribution.
There are no substantial
glacial lakes forming today that could produce comparable amounts of water (although a few hundred years of
