As the oceans levels rose,
glacial waters flowed through the limestone deposits of the then exposed Lighthouse Reef resulting in huge subterranean caverns.

Radar measurements and models of Earthly
glacial ice
flows led researchers to conclude that the glaciers spotted on Mars from orbiters contain nearly 150 billion cubic meters of
water.
The results of our recent study suggest that the Atlantic
water never ceased to
flow into the Nordic Seas during the
glacial period,» says Mohamed Ezat, PhD at Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE) at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway.
With the chalk ridge forming a dam to the south, and the Rhine and other rivers
flowing into the
glacial lake, the

Since so much of the ice sheet is grounded underwater, rising sea levels may have the effect of lifting the sheets, allowing more - and increasingly warmer -
water underneath it, leading to further bottom melting, more ice shelf disintegration, accelerated
glacial flow, and further sea level rise, and so on and on, another vicious cycle.
The results suggest that warm Atlantic
water never ceased to
flow into the Nordic seas during the
glacial period; inflow at the surface during the Holocene and warm interstadials changed to subsurface and intermediate inflow during cold stadials.
In the Andes,
glacial melt
water supports river

water supply for tens of millions of people during the long dry season.
And study authors found that 2 C to 5 C warming of local ocean
waters with somewhat greater local air temperature increases was capable of flooding these basins in stages — forcing Totten's
glacial ice to
flow out into the Southern Ocean and provide significant contributions to sea level rise.
Meanwhile,
glacial retreat means that less
water melts and
flows into streams and lakes during these hot, dry periods.
If retreating from melt that means more

Part of the
water flow in these river basins depends on snow and

There are numerous other problems — warm

flows preferentially toward
glacial grounding lines and stays there to melt the ice.
Higher elevation areas could experience altered
water flow in some river basins if current rates of
glacial retreat continue, but shifts in the location, intensity, and variability of rain and snow due to climate change will likely have a greater impact on regional
water supplies.
The researchers do not yet know whether the draining
water is increasing
glacial flow, and nor can they be sure how many such depressions in the Greenland ice mask buried meltwater storage tanks.
