The study, by British and American scientists, found that the observed peaks in extreme rain events are about twice as high as
what global climate simulations produce.
Researchers next will analyze the same multi-model ensemble
of global climate simulations used in this study to investigate the changes in atmospheric rivers in the North Atlantic that make landfall in Europe.
We find evidence in paleoclimate observations and
in global climate simulations supporting the existence of amplifying feedback processes that would contribute to nonlinear ice sheet response.
The study essentially meshed two kinds of computer models — the massive
global climate simulations used to project long - term consequences of building greenhouse gases and small high - resolution simulations of little atmospheric disturbances that can grow into hurricanes.
Kosaka and Xie
made global climate simulations in which they inserted specified observed Pacific Ocean temperatures; they found that the model simulated well the observed global warming slowdown or «hiatus,» although this experiment does not identify the cause of Pacific Ocean temperature trends.
«Arctic climate has and will continue to exhibit intricate patterns not reliably reproduced
by global climate simulations, thus underscoring their scientific incompleteness and need for advances in Arctic climate science, in measurements, theory and models.»
The following figures show effective global climate forcings employed in our
current global climate simulations (e.g., Hansen et al. 2007a, b), relative to their values in 1880.
The work supports the Laboratory's Global Security mission area and the Information, Science, and Technology science pillar through enhanced ocean model components
of global climate simulations.
Global climate simulations are just beginning to be able to resolve the largest of these key scales.
