global consensus, the member states of both the United Nations (UN), through its adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), through its Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2018, prioritized
education for
global citizenship and
global competence.
The results from PISA 2018 can inform potential changes in policy to strengthen
education for
global competence, including building the capacity of the teaching force to do so.
The pain of the race riots of the mid 1960s probably shaped some of the
education policies to foster racial inclusion and tolerance, and those memories are likely at the root of some of the current emphasis of the curriculum on the development of cross-cultural
competence and
global citizenship.

global competence» as an important aim of contemporary
education.
