Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) it turns out to be about a 30 - year period centered on the point at which you are trying to determine what the rate
of change in GMST is.
One thing that was not clear, was whether the analysis, that involved both observed temperatures from the HadCRUT4
dataset and
global climate models, took into account the fact that the observations do not cover 100 %
of Earth's surface (see RC post «Mind the Gap!»).
As critics
of «
global warming» science have pointed out for years, there are serious issues with the surface temperature
datasets that result in corrupted
global average temperatures that are currently used by policymakers.
The HadCRUT4
dataset, compiled from many thousands
of temperature measurements taken across the globe, from all continents and all oceans, is used to estimate
global temperature, shows that 2017 was 0.99 ± 0.1 °C above pre-industrial levels, taken as the average over the period 1850 - 1900, and 0.38 ± 0.1 °C above the 1981 - 2010 average.
But it will continue to be trumpted as the most often cited
dataset of the
global temperature record by alarmists, despite all the past errors found, all
of which artificially inflated temperatures.
But in the concluding remark Bob you say: «When the two GISS LOTI
datasets were again combined, we had removed approximately 85 %
of what some consider to be the «anthropogenic
global warming signal.»
Previously, an analysis on the
global satellite temperature
dataset found that atmospheric
global warming has actually been decelerating since the Super El Niño event
of 1997 - 1998.
A high - resolution
dataset is prepared for the
global Ocean during 1992 - 2006, with a spatial resolution
of 1 degree, and weekly and monthly temporal resolutions.
This criterion may not be satisfied if observations are available only over a short time period (as is the case for the vertical structure
of clouds), or if the predictor is defined through low - frequency variability (trends, decadal variability), or if there is a lack
of consistency among available
datasets (as in the case for
global - mean precipitation and surface fluxes).
The
Global Warming Speedometer for January 2001 to June 2016 shows observed warming on the HadCRUT4 and NCEI surface temperature
datasets as below IPCC's least prediction in 1990 and somewhat on the low side
of its 1995 and 2001 predictions, while the satellite
datasets show less warming than all IPCC predictions from 1990 to 2001.
As
global temperatures have been to all intents and purposes flat for the last 10 to 17 years, and given that all
datasets show the Arctic warming, it follows that the rest
of the world has been cooling.
