After many interviews with biologists and climate scientists focused on the Amazon, as well as people like Bruce Babbitt, the former United States secretary of the interior who has spent a lot of time crisscrossing the Amazon, I remain convinced that there is a path to
development for Brazil — even with the growing
global appetite for soy and biofuels and roads to the Pacific — that can preserve a large fraction of the vast
forest region.

The scope of this chapter, with a focus on food crops, pastures and livestock, industrial crops and biofuels, forestry (commercial
forests), aquaculture and fisheries, and small - holder and subsistence agriculturalists and artisanal fishers, is to: examine current climate sensitivities / vulnerabilities; consider future trends in climate,
global and regional food security, forestry and fisheries production; review key future impacts of climate change in food crops pasture and livestock production, industrial crops and biofuels, forestry, fisheries, and small - holder and subsistence agriculture; assess the effectiveness of adaptation in offsetting damages and identify adaptation options, including planned adaptation to climate change; examine the social and economic costs of climate change in those sectors; and, explore the implications of responding to climate change for sustainable
development.
«Deforestation and
forest degradation, through agricultural expansion, conversion to pastureland, infrastructure
development, destructive logging, fires etc. account for nearly 20 % of
global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire
global transportation sector and second only to the energy sector.»
Protecting tropical
forests is good for the
global climate and good for
development in forested countries.

While all
forests play a key role in providing ecosystem services, contributing to the
global sustainable
development objective and combating climate change, it is generally accepted that private
