Click Green: A new study from the University of California, Davis, provides a deeper understanding of the complex
global impacts of deforestation on greenhouse gas emissions.

Nor does the footprint reveal anything specific about the potential overuse
of cropland or grazing land,
global deforestation or even the
impact of sprawling cities.
The paper noted a gulf between
global efforts to reduce the climate
impacts of deforestation, and the dearth
of a
global response to the climate
impacts of food production.
Even if we consider the
impact of environmental degradation on humanity,
deforestation has a more significant and immediate
impact on local weather, water availability, water quality, and soil erosion than does
global climate change from greenhouse gases.
Comprehensive efforts to constrain the
impacts of climate change will require significant
global cooperation to reduce GHG emissions from
deforestation and forest degradation.

Further, emissions from
deforestation account for 20 %
of global carbon emissions, and there is concern that there would never be enough REDD projects to have a meaningful
impact on the large magnitude
of emissions from
deforestation.
Caused by the burning
of fossil fuels,
deforestation, agricultural practices, and other human
impacts, climate change has currently raised
global temperatures 0.8 degrees Celsius (1.44 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the Industrial Revolution average.
There has been
global concern about the rampant rates
of deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and the potential
impact this could be having on
global warming.
This flyer stresses that agriculture sectors are not only among the most vulnerable sectors to the
impacts of climate change but also directly responsible for 14 percent
of global greenhouse gas emissions and constitute a key driver
of deforestation and land degradation which account for an additional 17 percent.
Monitoring and verifying changes in
deforestation rates in developing countries and their
impacts on carbon emissions could increase substantially the transaction costs
of implementing a REDD + scheme on a
global scale.
Moreover, the CIFOR - led study
of which this model is a part has found that the rush to produce biofuel has resulted in high levels
of deforestation in many tropical countries, and therefore can have significant
impacts on
global climate change and local ecosystem services.
Air pollution, ozone depletion, acid precipitation,
global warming, desertification, smog production, and
deforestation are but a few
of the human
impacts on the climate system that arise from the alteration
of the mass and energy exchange with the atmosphere.
The overall
impact of these changes on
global energy consumption will be relatively small although the
impact on
deforestation and food security may be considerable.
Stefan Rahmstorf, a climate physicist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate
Impact Research, says that, even though CO2 emissions from fossil - fuel sources are down,
global emissions overall are still increasing, mainly because
of changes in terrestrial ecosystems, including
deforestation in the Amazon Basin.
Jeff Horowitz: As co-producer
of the
deforestation segment referred to as «The Last Stand» (airing in episodes # 1 and # 2), my job was to work in partnership with Solly Granatstein, an amazing, Emmy award - winning director / producer to create the narrative arc that took the viewer from the
global problem
of the pollution caused by burning forests, to the political challenges faced by many rainforest nations as they try to regulate this practice, and back to the U.S. for a look at how consumer buying patterns can
impact the way forests are protected.
Regardless
of whether early land use significantly affected
global climate, understanding the
global role
of land use in determining the onset and magnitude
of anthropogenic climate change is critical for gauging the climatic
impact of current and future modifications
of the terrestrial biosphere, including efforts to offset fossil fuel emissions by reducing
deforestation (114).
Now the researchers plan to apply the methodology to other nations to build up a
global evidence base for protected area effectiveness, to «move beyond looking at protected areas as a monolithic concept and clarify how different kinds
of protected areas, and different ways
of locating them in the landscape, affect
deforestation and local human welfare», and to measure the
impacts of protected areas on humans that live in neighbouring communities, an issue that is «subject to contentious international debate but for which there is little credible evidence to support the opposing views».
The full
impact of deforestation on
global carbon emissions is only now (finally) becoming more widely acknowledged (about 20 %
of global emissions) and strategies envisioned to stop or at least slow the destruction.
Considering forest - threatening factors such as fires,
deforestation, and the emission
of greenhouse gases, the research found if the regions
of the Amazon most crucial to maintaining the biome's climate are lost, large sections
of the once lush rainforest may be reduced to a virtual desert.According to a report from Globo Amazônia, the study conducted by Gilvan Sampaio
of National Institute
of Special Research (INPE) found that the vegetation
of the Amazon will be particularly
impacted by rising
global temperatures in the years to come, in addition to the continued threats posed by
deforestation and fires.
