But a new study published in the journal Science Advances has concluded that another impact of global climate change might help coral reefs survive increasing sea temperatures: «even a modest sea level rise can substantially reduce temperature extremes within tide - dominated reefs, thereby partially offsetting the local effects of future ocean warming,» the authors of the study write.

Sea level rise has happened, and will happen in the future, as a result of global warming, the report finds.

A climate researcher for decades, he had long been in the midst of political and scientific debates over global warming, tirelessly urging political leaders and the public to take action now to avoid disasters such as rising sea levels in the future.

The largest unknown for future sea level rise is caused by uncertainty in the predicted response of the Antarctic ice sheet to global warming.

The results, published in the journal Earth's Future, point to two possible pathways: 1) a relatively steady but substantial rise in sea levels even if we sharply reduce global emissions, flooding 100 million people's homes worldwide by the end of the century, and 2) a wild - card world that could jeopardize civilization itself if fossil fuels continue to dominate.

For a future of continued growth in emissions the new results indicate a likely global average sea - level rise between 1.1 and 2.1 meters (3.6 to 6.9 feet)-- roughly double the IPCC - consistent estimate.

Let us jump straight in with the following graph which nicely sums up the key findings about past and future sea - level rise: (1) global sea level is rising, (2) this rise has accelerated since pre-industrial times and (3) it will accelerate further in this century.

And earlier this week, another study concluded that — much like today's decisions will determine the fate of West Antarctica — decisions made today about whether or not to curb emissions will have clear repercussions in future sea level rise: For each five - year delay in «peaking» global carbon emissions, median estimates for sea level rise in 2300 go up by 20 centimeters.

The IPCC has already concluded that it is «virtually certain that human influence has warmed the global climate system» and that it is «extremely likely that more than half of the observed increase in global average surface temperature from 1951 to 2010» is anthropogenic.1 Its new report outlines the future threats of further global warming: increased scarcity of food and fresh water; extreme weather events; rise in sea level; loss of biodiversity; areas becoming uninhabitable; and mass human migration, conflict and violence.

The fear now is that increasing global temperatures and sea level rises could trigger ever stronger winds and — in turn — larger dead zones off the coast of Oregon and other states in the near future.

Forecasts of future ice sheet behavior appear even more uncertain: Under the same high — global warming scenario, eight ice sheet models predicted anywhere between 0 and 27 cm of sea level rise in 2100 from Greenland melt.

These are already revealing a worrisome future in which rising global temperatures will likely cause environmental changes such as rising sea levels and stronger hurricanes, which could uproot communities and intensify competition for food and other resources.
