First of all probably the biggest climate news of 2017 comes not from the scientific literature (is therefore not featured in the Royal
Society report), but from direct
global observations:
based on preliminary data the current year is likely to rank among the three hottest years on the
global record — including 2015 (2nd) and 2016 (1st), with 2014 ranking 4th.
What is more, past
global warming has included both minor and mass extinction events (e.g. PETM, Permian - Triassic extinction) so even if current warming is in line with what's repeatedly been experienced in the past, it doesn't follow that either the process of warming or the end result are desireable from the perspective of maintaining an advanced, affluent, complex human
society based on creating reliable surpluses of food for 7.5 + billion people.
The takeaway from these reports is that all energy sources, including carbon -
based fuels, are necessary to meet future
global energy demand growth as
society manages climate change risks.
So why did the Royal
Society find it necessary to publish new research
based on a new dataset to demonstrate that the sun was not responsible for
global warming after all?
