I did notice that there is corn
gluten meal in every flavor except for the lamb and rice so if there are dogs out there who are sensitive to it they might want to be wary of it, but it isn't # 1 in the ingredients
list, that tells me that the food has a very small amount and is not primarily made of corn
gluten meal.
Coupled with the corn
gluten meal farther down the
list, this means the food contains quite a bit of corn but, if your puppy isnt allergic to corn, this shouldnt be a particular problem.
Farther down the ingredient
list you will note that the food also contains corn
gluten meal.

lists the First Mate Free - Run Chicken
Meal Formula as GMO - free while the Kasik's formula is
listed as
gluten - free, but we're not sure if they are really very different.
For example, by dividing corn into corn, corn bran, corn germ
meal, corn
gluten, corn
gluten meal and corn syrup, a manufacturer can produce a food that is perhaps 50 % corn and 10 % chicken and make it appear to have chicken as the main ingredient by splitting the corn into the above ingredients, effectively moving it down the
list of ingredients.
You'll never see
meals, by - products,
glutens, synthetic supplements, GMOs or other fillers
listed in our ingredients.
First of all, I will not even consider feeding any foods that contain any of the following: meat by - products, poultry by - products, any food with the actual words «meat
meal» in the ingredient
list (meat
meal could potentially contain anything such as diseased or dead / dying animals, including the possibility of euthenised pets from shelters (yes with the euthenasia drugs still in their systems and sometimes even with collars still on), as well as a legal allowed % of plastic, chemicals and other unmentionables), soy, corn or any fragments thereof, wheat or any fragments thereof, any kind of
gluten or
gluten meals, sugar, artificial flavours, artificial colors, BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin
Avoid foods
listing food coloring, meat by - products, corn
gluten, soybean
meal and artificial flavoring.
Of the 7 different Dog Chow formulas I checked, all had Corn
listed as the first ingredient and most also had either wheat or corn
gluten meal also in the top 3!
Some Nutro formulas, especially the puppy formulas, may contain corn
gluten meal in the top of their ingredients
list.
While Purina ONE Indoor Advantage
lists real turkey as the main ingredient, it does include corn
gluten meal as well.
It is because of the AAFCO ingredient definition process that the pet food ingredient
list includes components names like wheat
gluten, poultry by - product
meal and sodium selenite.
If, for example, rice makes up 50 percent of a formula and meat only 25 percent, it's possible to
list the rice as three or four individual ingredients all under 25 percent each, for example, brown rice, white rice, rice bran, and rice

Blue Buffalo counters that Nestlé Purina's flagship brand, Purina Dog Chow,
lists corn as its first ingredient, along with corn
gluten meal, soybean
meal, poultry by - product
meal, and numerous artificial color additives and preservatives.
Also, you do not want a food that is high in carbohydrates which have a grain
listed first (e.g. corn, corn
meal, corn
gluten etc.).
Ingredient
list example for «Product X With Real Lamb and Rice»: Ground yellow corn, chicken byproduct
meal, wheat, animal fat, corn
gluten meal, lamb, rice, natural poultry flavor, salt, minerals, vitamins...
Reading the label again and you'll see in their ingredient
list ground whole corn, beet pulp, ground whole wheat, brewers rice, and corn and
gluten meal.
That is why, if you check the ingredients labels on their «kidney health» diets, corn or wheat
gluten meal and / or soybean
meal, are high on the protein ingredient
list.
For example, on the label of one brand of low - protein food blocks made for lab rats, the first six items
listed are wheat middlings, ground wheat, ground corn, corn
gluten meal, calcium carbonate and soybean oil, followed by 26 added supplements.
If you look further down the
list, you'll see ingredients such as chicken
meal, poultry by - product
meal, meat - and - bone
meal, corn
gluten meal, soybean
meal, etc..
