Most of these movies
seen like an excuse for Adam Sandler and his friends to
go on vacation, and they
film a movie and
hope to make some money from it to finance it.
When I
went to
see «Frances Ha» last week I somehow managed to avoid all trailers but had high
hopes based on the word of mouth out of the Edinburgh festival and I have two Noah Baumbach
films in my top thirty movies of all time.
Whether or not this
film will
go down as the cult classic that Rogen and Goldberg are clearly
hoping for remains to be
seen, but come the end of 2013, it will certainly register in the memory banks of cinema -
goers to a much larger degree than all the comedy
films that have preceded it this year.

Regardless of this fact, I still
went in with an outlook that I maintain for every new
film I
see:
Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst.
The Cannes lineup announcement came and
went with no mention of Malick, but today we've got some news that provides
hope for those wishing to
see the
film sometime this year.
They don't really interrupt the flow of the
film at all, however one would
hope anyone likely to be offended by The Da Vinci Code probably wouldn't be
going along to
see it anyway (unless they really really wanted to get angry at something...).
But while that's certainly been the story of our 2014, it's not particularly representative of the what's been
going in the U.S. theaters, so we've strictly limited ourselves to a slightly uneven split between
films that have actually already been released, and those that we've
seen at a festival (Sundance, SXSW, Berlin, Tribeca or Cannes) that either have 2014 dates slated, or we strongly suspect /
hope that they will.
Going into The Post, I didn't have high
hopes from its announcement to its release as 20th Century Fox have marketed it as a «Oscar bait»
film (it sure paid off, gaining Meryl Streep a Best Actor in a Supporting Role and a Best Picture nomination), which usually wards me off from
seeing a
film (
see: Moonlight, Argo, The Artist, The King's Speech and so forth).
