The
book was
written more than two decades ago when Nepo
went through cancer treatment.
The amount of research, outlining,
writing, rewriting and hair pulling that
goes into crafting a great
book requires
more than the «nonchalant attention» you'd devote to a side hustle or passion project.

If you are lucky your manuscript finds a
more experienced editor and the editor
goes through trying to make your
book a better
book for what you
wrote.
If you
wrote and published just a little bit
more and did some of these as self - pubbed
books at a lower price range to
go along with your trad pub deals, I'll bet you could make a lot
more.
One
book will very, very rarely create an entire career for an author — and even those who do achieve those heights (Donna Tartt, The Secret History, Elizabeth Wurtzel, Prozac Nation) still
go on to
write more books, eventually.
No
book you
write will be easy, and some will be
more challenging than others, but you'll get better as time
goes on.
I
more well - rounded idea of what
goes into getting a
book published, as well as specific steps to take to get my
book written and published.
So if readers want
more of my
books, they need to buy those I've already
written in greater numbers, and then I'll be able to
go on holiday
more often, and get
more writing done!
I think you are right about focusing on
writing book # 2, in your case
more content is
going to be a key success factor.
Whilst this blog post has been a harsh one and quite a difficult one to
write, I do believe that there will be
more authors who choose to self - publish who will
go on to sell as many
books as Mark Lawrence, Brent Weeks, Kameron Hurley, Wesley Chu, etc..
Your article was for beginners — but if we expand the discussion to people who have
gone through those paces, and CAN
write a
book that is likely to find an audience, the decision on which path is best is MUCH
more complicated.

Interestingly, while NaNo is
more of a
writing exercise and a motivational tool, there have been a number of
books that at least began life as NaNo novels, but through massive editing and polishing did
go on to become bestsellers; Sara Gruen's Like Water for Elephants is perhaps the most well - known, having been also adapted for film.
Some reviewers are so sure of their ability to predict where I'm
going next that they barely bother to glance at the
book at all, with embarrassing results (check out the journalist who described Coastliners as «another of Harris» sweeping historical epics», or the one who based her entire review of Jigs & Reels on a single story and
wrote how «once
more, food and France play a leading role in this feelgood confection.»)
