goitrogen in the diet.
If so, what precautions have you found encourage better digestion to avoid the downside of oxalates and
goitrogens in so many of the most popular green smoothie vegetables?
Fermentation does not neutralize
the goitrogens in crucifers.
Note, however, that fermentation does not reduce
goitrogens in crucifers.
I'm not very trusting and have read warnings about goitrogens for years, so I decided, before getting out the salt and my choppers, to search for more info on
goitrogens in fermented veggies.
I was also wondering if you steam your cruciferae and whether you were concerned about
goitrogens in raw cruciferous vegetables (brassicaceae), which ones have the most goitrogenic compounds, and how long you steam them for (assuming you do).
Rami, are
goitrogens in soybeans and sweet potatoes, etc. also inactivated by cooking?
You may be of the belief that cooking helps to dissolve and inactivate
the goitrogens in your brassicas.
Well, it's possible that someone with thyroid issues may have been told that
the goitrogens in the brassicas can do their body more harm than good.
Goitrogens in foods that contain them are usually reduced by cooking such as cruciferous vegetables like broccoli.
Fermentation does not reduce
goitrogens in these veggies, but since fermented crucifers such as sauerkraut are typically eaten as a condiment and, hence, in small amounts, consumption is fine if the diet is rich in iodine.

I often see people loading up on big raw salads that seem harmless, but raw cruciferous vegetables found
in cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts contain
goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid function.
Let's say we break down the many complex parts of the broccoli plant, over 100 beneficial compounds, and we find one that, when chemically isolated and
in large amounts, could interfere with thyroid function —
goitrogens.
Synergistically, the hundreds of phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and enzymes

Many people are concerned about the natural occurring

Those involved
in animal husbandry have known for quite some time that it is a bad idea to forage their animals on cruciferous vegetables; unless low -
goitrogen strains have been selected for grazing.
Goitrogens do block iodine uptake
in the body but cooking vegetables and continuing to eat sea vegetables allow for the thyroid to have all the iodine it needs to thrive.
If these veggies should be cooked to neutralize
goitrogens and then the water DISCARDED, shouldn't we not use them
in soups, or cook them first, then add to soup?
All of the recipes

goitrogens that are potentially problematic to thyroid health.
When foods like sauerkraut are consumed as condiments, however, the small amount of
goitrogens within them is not harmful if one's diet is adequate
in iodine.»
In the article The Dark Side of Crucifers:
Goitrogens, Chris Masterjohn PhD has this to say:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've learned that kale, collards, turnip, mustard, and beet greens, Chinese cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous veggies all contain
goitrogen and a lot of people are being frustrated trying to eat kale that is raw or microwaved, pan or oven fried, and not boiled 30 minutes
in copious amounts of water to get rid of the offending substance, which blocks their trying to lose weight, even though they are exercising and dieting by messing up their thyroid metabolism..
Goitrogens are compounds
in foods that can inhibit thyroid function.
Avoid eating them
in large quantities raw (such as
in green smoothies or juice), as cooking decreases
goitrogen content by 30 %.

Goitrogens are compounds that can interfere with thyroid function, especially
in people who already have compromised thyroid function.
Cooking certain foods can increase their nutrient content, and
in addition, help to decrease «anti-nutrients» (that bind to essential minerals) and inactivate certain substances that may be problematic if consumed
in high amounts (like
goitrogens).

These are author Jim Simmons» blog comment
in response to my latest report on
goitrogens and cruciferous vegetables.
Goitrogens are compounds that lower thyroid function and are found
in raw cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc.), soy, and other foods.
I am not sure what role
goitrogens play at this point... If you are already eating low carb and avoid reactive foods and are interested
in being a «guinea pig» for three weeks and also remove
goitrogens, I'd love for you to report back to me on what results you found!
If you are already eating low carb and avoid reactive foods and are interested
in being a «guinea pig» for three weeks and also remove
goitrogens, I'd love for you to report back to me on what results you found... because after all, how you feel is most important!!
I also recommend avoiding dairy products (not due to
goitrogen content, but rather due to dairy protein sensitivity that is present
in up to 80 % of people with Hashimoto's).
It's difficult to tell whether the carb restriction,
goitrogen restriction, avoiding highly reactive foods (gluten, dairy, soy, eggs), or all of the above, played a role
in improving patient outcomes.
I used to be heavy dairy eater my whole life, but a few weeks ago I've read an article on this blog about PCOS, and ditched dairy,
goitrogens, caffeine (btw I've never eaten soy
in my life, we don't eat it
in Russia).
People with iodine deficiency - induced hypothyroidism may find that
goitrogens cause further suppression of thyroid activity, however, most patients with Hashimoto's do not have an iodine deficiency, and the goitrogenic mechanism
in these otherwise very healthy vegetables is not of particular concern to Hashimoto's.
He is against soy for the following reasons: — Most of it is GM — Response: if this bothers you choose organic — it has
goitrogens which interfere with thyroid function — Response: my understanding is that this is only a problem
in people who are low
in iodine — so just make sure you are getting enough of this nutrient — it is estrogenic — Reponse: the science on this issue is so much more complex than Mercola indicates.
Therefore, although everyone is different, most people with Hashimoto's should be able to eat most
goitrogens, even
in their raw state, (with the exception of soy and canola).
