Back in July last year I started to notice some very
good Economy Class fares between Europe and the US and I decided that I had to see just how practical it was to purchase a cheap flight from the UK to a European city and to then start my long - haul journey from there.
You may occasionally find good Premium Economy fares for departures from Helsinki or Düsseldorf but, in my experience, those two cities are more likely to offer up
good Economy Class fares.

Saver
fares are the
best, especially for
economy round - trip tickets to Europe, the Caribbean and South America, and for first
class partner flights in Asia.
I searched through months on Delta and Alaska's website and only found a seat here and there for business
class (mixed -
fare) and
economy wasn't much
better.
Premium cabin travel doesn't have to be horrifically expensive nor does it have to be purchased with a loyalty currency (Avios) if you're to get a
good deal — you can easily pay more for
Economy Class fares to some of these cities so these Business
Class fares really are very
good indeed — especially the
fare to Los Angeles.

If you earn AAdvantage status using Elite Qualifying Points (EQP), you're actually marginally
better off under the new chart because two of the
economy fare classes (S & N) will now earn 1.0 EPQ per mile rather than 0.5 EQP.
I've been on the look out for
good fares since the beginning of August and, while American did post a somewhat tempting
Economy Class fare from London back in September, the Business
Class fares out of Europe have come nowhere near what I'm prepared to pay....

More seats means more pressure to fill those seats and that can only be
good news for prices — we've already seen roundtrip
Economy fares in the $ 300 — $ 400 range for 2017 and I suspect it won't be long before we'll see some great Business
Class fares appearing too.
There may also be additional taxes and fees to pay (on top of those that are already included in your original
fare) if you're moving up from
Economy Class to a premium cabin — flights out of the UK are a very
good example of this.
As
well as that, any airline or alliance that I choose to fly also needs to be one that regularly offers
good deals on the routes I want to fly — as the airlines around the world gradually increase the cost of award travel it's becoming increasingly important, for those of us with a healthy aversion to
Economy Class, to be able to find great value Business
Class fares to keep our flights comfortable.
If another great
fare came up and it involved flying on the Qatar Airways A330 I certainly wouldn't dismiss it out of hand — it's still a lot
better than sitting in any other airline's Premium
Economy or
Economy Class cabin — but I would make sure I had exhausted all my other options before I booked.
The low
fare calendar makes it easy to see, at a glance, what the
best opts are whether it's premium
economy or first
class.
Mileage earnings on Delta flights will soon be a lot
better than in the past (across most
fare bookings) and the cost of most
Economy Class transatlantic award have come down....
There is some very
good news here for those booking
Economy Class fares — 20,000 miles for a roundtrip award between the UK and the East coast is cheap.
Short - haul and ultra-short flights in all
fare classes will get a boost to their earn rate while long - haul and ultra-long flights in
economy class and premium
economy get a bump as
well.

economy fares are still the same, but if you were planning on using Avios to book Cathay Pacific First

well... I guess I suggest you book it before April 27th!

Regional upgrades are another Choice option made available for Platinum (four certificates) and Diamond Medallions (eight certificates) and are
good on any
economy fare (except for E
class).
Standard
Economy Class fares offer the
best value for money and often include benefits such as complimentary meals and beverages.
