First, because they're so huge and have to cater to so many people, there's almost no room
for good character work, which is the center of any story.

exactingly good character work in a film that, despite its good intentions and stately execution, occasionally borders on thumping, pedantic history lesson.
It's a stunt casting of Connery and, when compared to the source material — it's no surprise, but he's really

only good character work at any point in those middle nine episodes.

the best character work I've seen in any movie, featuring some of the best character actors, and with a writer / director team known for endless subtle touches, it's a film you can watch again and again, and never tire of.
