Good critique groups are the easiest (and cheapest) way for new writers to learn the nuts and bolts of the craft and keep those cringe - making first drafts from gumming up agents» and publishers» desks (or becoming part of Konrath's tsunami of crap.)
Just would like to find
a good critique group in my area that I could join for the tougher advice which I know my writing needs.

A good critique group is a treasure and a bad one is destructive.
We love them, we hate them, we write funny blog posts about them, but the fact is that
a good critique group can be a writer's best friend with literary benefits.
What I can recommend is finding
a good critique group, continuing to write come hell or high water, and, of course, never, ever giving up.
Whenever we receive a submission like this — one that simply isn't ready yet — we always recommend that the author utilize
a good critique group to help polish the manuscript.

Because
a good critique group can make a huge difference in how well and how quickly you grow as a writer.
But what we really need are folks — a trusted beta reader or
a good critique group — who will tell us «This ain't working.»

a good critique group which provided assistance in a manner you found energizing and helpful.

We feel secure if we are sure that our book includes a gripping opening hook that's been approved by our
critique group; characters that our beta readers have said are «relatable»; and a plot arc that unfolds in accordance with the most popular method of how to write
well currently on the market.
If Joyce, or Nabokov, or J.K. Rowling had run all their work through a modern
critique group, frequented online writing forums, attended writing workshops, and absorbed all the (generally)
well - intentioned nonsense talked about beats, the Hero's Journey, plot arcs, adverb use, and character change, it's unlikely they would have ever achieved the fame and status they have today.
In addition to publishing, consulting, writing and speaking, Tara serves on the Boards of Directors for a Christian writers»
critique group, as
well as acting as co-president and chaplain of the
group.
A
good critique / writers
group is ideal (at least mine is).
One of the really important things for a
critique group is to get a
good balance of experience, AND people who are
well read.
The
best use of an editor is to polish a book that's already been workshopped in a
group or
critiqued by several beta readers.
My
critique group also provides some of my
best betas.
If you're participating in a
critique group, it's wise to invest in a couple of
good writing books or a vetted, solid writing course as
well.
One thing
critique groups can't do
well is help with story arc, because we look at things chapter by chapter.
I think that's true in reviews as
well as
critique groups.
Ann — Starting your own
critique group is a
good way to keep the membership under control.
These communities seem
good for newer writers who don't have an in - person
critique group, and I've recommended them.

Well, this week I finally ran the book 1 synopsis past my
critique group, and they said I have too much for two books, so now I'm back to a trilogy!
And as you say, the
best way to do that is in a
critique group.

Although you must be willing to read and comment on the writings of other members in the
