better served by more realistic leads.

It's been a very
good year for David Lynch fans, what with the release of Twin Peaks: The Return, Mulholland Drive's stunning 4k restoration and the highly entertaining documentary David Lynch: The Art Life, which explores the pop surrealist's career up to the making of 1977
midnight movie marvel, Eraserhead.
That said, 1969 is an awful year on the whole for
movies — only
Midnight Cowboy and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are standouts, along with the un-Oscared Medium Cool (similar to and far
better than Z), which also came out that year.

For his effort, Lynch received an Academy Award nomination for
best director and quickly moved him from the
midnight movie circuit to the mainstream.
Hollywood was truly at a crossroads then, and so were the Oscars, which had nominated in 1970 such daringly different kinds of films as
Midnight Cowboy (the eventual
Best Picture winner), Easy Rider, Z, and Medium Cool, while also giving
Best Picture nods to films like Hello Dolly and Anne Of The Thousand Days, two
movies more representative of the past than the future.
But having seen the
movie, I can say that Before
Midnight is the
best movie of Before Sunrise trilogy yet.
Get Out turns out to be more fun, and more provocative, than it is scary, at least in the traditional
midnight -
movie sense: The film works so
well as a gauntlet of social horror that Peele almost didn't need the more traditional thriller elements he introduces in the third act, when a carefully calibrated build in just - because - you're - paranoid dread gives way to some disappointingly conventional survival games.
