I've said many times in my
reviews that many
of the
best films in any genre use their premise to create subtext, almost to the point where the superficial plot is no longer the most relevant or appealing aspect.
While star Johnny Depp's singing earned mixed
reviews — and the movie dropped or shortened some
of Sondheim's songs — the
film as a whole received plenty
of critical acclaim as
well as a Golden Globe for
best picture (with Depp himself earning an Oscar nomination for his performance).
As for this
film I can't quite understand why it has received such negative
reviews, it has excellent action, stealth, espionage
of sorts and has the 80's recreated very
well.
It's no Annie Hall, sure, but Midnight in Paris is Woody Allen's
best reviewed film in over a decade and his highest grossing release
of all time; it's also being mentioned as a likely
