The fact that First Things published a long article on my book Mercy: The Essence
of the Gospel and the Key to Christian Existence is an honor even when the article is a critique, which — as usual in academic disputes — needs critique from my
side as
well («
What Mercy Is,» March).
The concept
of once saved always saved takes a bit to get your head around but Gods grace is greater than our sin and greater than our
good works it just takes faith in Jesus Christ to recieve Gods grace. In saying that to continue to sin as a christian is like playing with fire you will be burnt.Paul talks
of the sexual immorality in corinthian church
of the son and father that were sleeping with the same wife they were excommunicated from the church the members were not allowed to even eat with them until they repented. There are consequences for our actions. The other
side to this is that if you continue to sin as a christian you are not walking by faith but walking by the flesh and are really backsliding. In the backslidden state you also become powerless and open to attack by satan as long as we walk in the flesh he can influence us to get worse not
better. If we are walking in Christ satan may still try to tempt us but we are empowered by the holy spirit and overcome him and our faith increases. Both are saved by grace but one is powerless because
of sin versus saved but an overcomer having been set free from sin i think this is
what Paul was trying to explain. It is
better to be an overcomer than overcome by sin.brentnz
Science is beginning to reveal
what the Church has so vehemently taught that life begins at conception and if there is any doubt it is
better to err on the
side of life.
In the graciousness
of the book (something often lacking when people engage Emergent, no names but...), in its passionate for the Scriptures, in its understanding that true faith shows itself in love, in its acceptance
of the many things postmodernism has going for it without capitulating to todays culture, and especially in the willingness to both take on and unite both
sides, Wittmer has written something here to be commended for, and something that all believers no matter
what side they lean toward would do
well to read.
If that be the case then 2 Thessalonians doesn't conflict at all with 1 Thessalonians, And if that's
what your particular experts based it on, then it does go to show that the experts are not always correct, and if they are not always correct, then your total assurance
of the experts you
side with may very
well be misplaced.
But the theological error that underlies this idealization
of violence leads them into a new, a sociopolitical Manicheanism which (like the earlier, metaphysical Manicheanism) is also an idealism, a simplifying resource to help people participate in a complicated world where, they know, they had
better do
what the powers that be recommend and take
sides.
Its just plan stupid and a waste
of time, if you believe in god or buddah or allah or anyother

Whats one big problem that i cant understand is why people are so narrow minded on both
sides of the specturm and even within different religions.
The larger problem at play here is people largely as a whole are for lack
of a
better word, stupid, and I'm not talking about either evolutionists or creationist -
what I actually mean is both
sides!
She didn't mean any harm, but when we don't know
what another person has been through, it's
best to err on the
side of caution rather than assuming the person just left, deserted the ship, or whatever else people might think.

They stated «You can talk until you are blue in the face to these non-believers about one

You can talk until you are blue in the face to these non-believers about one

At
best, the church school complements and undergirds the constructive
side of what the family does in this area.
But foreign policy,
of course, is largely a matter
of prudence, and there are and should be
good Catholics on both
sides of issues such as
what to do about Iran's nuclear ambitions.
He takes the
side of the real dignity, as Christopher Lasch said so
well,
of the life
of the working man who knows who he is and
what he's supposed to do.
Well that's kinda how it works... I'd rather have a girlfriend I can kiss in public and sit on the same
side of the booth with... I don't know
what that is like... I've tried and I get yelled and cursed at and even asked to leave.
If you convince a bunch
of depressed people (because that's 33 %
of America folks) that life is
better on the other
side and there are people who are not like you, who are different and don't believe
what you believe, you're going to have problems.
I might be ecelectic, but
what makes me consistent is my belief is something that combines the belief
of Scripture with that
of Englightenment philosophy: nurturing life is goodness, simply, and helping others to see a model that thinking for ourselves can help heal the world
of all past injustices - so that we all learn to WANT to be
good... within reason and by our own choice...: you have a society like that, you'll have less injustices, less violence, less money - grubbing by people who hold themselves as representatives
of «authority» -(which
side are you on, by the way, if you see the world as so divided in such a bipolar reality...?)
Ogden, for example, tells us that «God is not neutral or indifferent to creaturely conflict but always
sides with
what makes for the
good of his creatures as against all that makes for evil» (FF 94).
, sober obedience to the government
of the Church, distinction as far as possible between
what is ever - valid and
what is changeable in her faith and constitution, consideration for those St. Paul calls the weak and for the Church as a whole as
well as patience with her human
side.
But that empirical, visible church, located where we happen to live and which we can see functioning
well or ill, is only the hither
side — the imperfect expression, if you will —
of what the New Testament thinks
of as the «Body
of Christ» and describes as «without spot or blemish,» as «the household
of faith,» and as «the family
of God.»
It works
well with this view, and with the «theological instruction»
side of discipleship, which is
what Matthew 28:19 - 20 is about.
I think
what we who are Churchmen need to realize is that although the Church is the divinely - established fellowship in which Christ's work is being done, this divine reality
of the Church is coupled with
what, for want
of a
better word, I may call the Church's «empirical»
side.
Because
what happens, again and again and again, is people listen to that logic, look at both
sides of the issue, and say «
Well then I guess I'm not a real Christian.»
No matter
what side of the aisle we were on — or even if we were sitting on the sidelines or in the middle — we all wanted something
better for our country these past 18 months.
What I'm saying in all this is that even though we go through times
of strain in our marriage because
of deconstruction, we behave as though it is transitory, a passing storm, and that we will weather it and come out
of the other
side better and stronger.
When I help an old lady across the street, or when the
good samaritan helps the guy on the
side of the road, its not because we are religious, its because we know
what's right.
