There are quite a few missing
nominations here, for work debatably more vital than Janney's, including the virtuoso cinematography by Belgium's Nicolas Karakatsanis (Bullhead, The Drop), which
gets out on the ice in ridiculously dynamic long takes, dovetailing like an immaculate Torvill and Dean routine with the movie's livid, addictive, disreputable rock soundtrack.
Nightcrawler, on the other hand, might struggle to gather the
nominations it's
got here come Oscar time.
Renner will most likely
get an Oscar
nomination for the work he does
here and deservedly so.
Here's my debate question: Whether or not Winger
gets nominated, whose
nomination would be worse?
With so many potential Oscar contenders like
Get Out and Lady Bird being so very «American» we might see lower
nomination totals for them and possibly higher totals for more European fare like Call Me By Your Name and distinctly UK productions like Dunkirk, Darkest Hour and Victoria and Abdul to do well and for the US / UK hybrid Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri to make a killing
here.
It was assumed it would
get in
here rather easily, but instead, it looks like it's effectively been eliminated from the competition, and subsequently for Best Picture (no
nomination here equals no chance of winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and nowadays no screenplay Oscar means no Best Picture Oscar).
But before we do that,
here's to the «losers» — the worthy ones of 2016 that, for whatever cockamamie reason, didn't even
get a
nomination.

I really think The Social Network's score is in a stronger position than this column, and other prognosticators, might have us believe; considering The Hurt Locker's bogus
nomination here, really the branch's way of
getting on on the hype of the movie, surely they'll be able to find room for Reznor and Finch.
That leaves a fifth slot for... I'm going out on a limb
here and guessing that Johnny Depp's work in the enormously successful «Pirates of the Caribbean» was so goofy and mannered, it attracted enough attention and grins to
get a
nomination.
No huge surprises
here; it's nice to see that Inception
got nominated for Best Picture, though Christopher Nolan was surprisingly snubbed for a Best Director
nomination (my bet would be that he
gets Best Original Screenplay).
Both Sally Hawkins and June Squibb received their first Oscar
nominations this year, but have a much greater chance of
getting recognized at the Independent Spirit Awards than
here.
