In this view, Paul is saying, «For by
grace you have been saved through faith, and faith is not of yourselves, faith is the gift of God.»
Based on this observation, the fourth view is that the pronoun is referring to the entire «by
grace you have been saved through faith» concept, and the fifth view is that the pronoun only refers to the concept which Paul has stated twice in the context, namely, «by grace you have been saved» (Ephesians 2:5, 8).
In this view, Ephesians 2:8 could be read this way: «For by
grace you have been saved through faith, and it is especially not of yourselves, it is especially the gift of God.»
Ephesians 2:8 - 9 For by
grace you have been saved through faith.
«8 For by
grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.»
(1Corinthians 15:17) «For by
grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.
they say» For by

Ephesians 2:8,9 «8 For by
grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.»
«You were dead through trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world,» says Ephesians, but now «by
grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing.»
Ephesians 2:8 & 9 — «For by
grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast».
Phrases like, «For by
grace you have been saved through faith... not of works...» (Eph 2:8 - 9), and, «to him who does not work but believes» (Rom 4:5), are complete nonsense, if works are part of the definition of the words faith and believe.

All Christians know, of course, that it
is through God's self - outpouring upon the cross that we
are saved, and that we
are made able by
grace to participate in Christ's suffering; but this should not obscure that other truth revealed at Easter: that the incarnate God enters «this cosmos» not simply to disclose its immanent rationality, but to break the boundaries of fallen nature asunder, and to refashion creation after its ancient beauty» wherein neither sin nor death
had any place.
We can rejoice that we
are saved not
through the immanent mechanisms of history and nature, but by
grace; that God will not unite all of history's many strands in one great synthesis, but will judge much of history false and damnable; that He will not simply reveal the sublime logic of fallen nature, but will strike off the fetters in which creation languishes; and that, rather than showing us how the tears of a small girl suffering in the dark
were necessary for the building of the Kingdom, He will instead raise her up and wipe away all tears from her eyes» and there shall
be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor any more pain, for the former things will
have passed away, and He that sits upon the throne will say, «Behold, I make all things new.»
