It is like
a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.»
And the Lord said, «If you had faith as
a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, «Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea; and it would obey you.»»
Faith here is clearly trust, in this instance in God's provisioning, and the «faith as
a grain of mustard seed» in the teaching of Jesus would seem to be an allusion to some such saying as this one.
It could become this, on reflection, but the fact is that faith is used absolutely in the characteristic «Your faith has saved you», or «faith as
a grain of mustard seed...» It is not there further defined as faith in God, in Jesus, in the good news, as it is in the characteristic reformulations in the tradition, for example Mark 1.15: `... believe in the gospel».
«If you have faith like
a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Go over there, and it will go.»
He seems to have laughed in my face and belied such promises as «Ask what ye will believing» and «If ye have the faith of
a grain of mustard seed.»
Surely their faith community has greater faith than
a grain of mustard seed.
I completely agree with Bishop Emeritus of Rome Benedict XVI that we must find ways of re-proposing the Gospel to an increasingly post-Christian Western world, «never being satisfied with the fact that from
the grain of mustard seed, the great tree of the Universal Church grew -LSB-.]»
Elsewhere (Mt 17:20; Lk 17:6) Jesus speaks of «faith as
a grain of mustard seed,» obviously meaning «even a tiny bit of faith.»
For the Kingdom of God as well as for evangelisation, the instrument and vehicle of the Kingdom of God, the parable of
the grain of mustard seed [Mk 4:31 - 32] is always valid.»
For the next saying, concerning faith like
a grain of mustard seed (Lk 17:5 - 6; Mt 17:20), Luke provides an occasion: «The apostles said to the Lord.
Only a short step separates this notion from Jesus» teaching that faith, like
a grain of mustard seed, can move the figurative sycamore tree of natural obstacles (Luke 17:5).
Your good book says that faith as
a grain of mustard seed can move mountains.
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as
a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Matt 13:31 - 32:» «the kingdom of heaven is like to
a grain of mustard seed which... is the least of all seeds, but when it is grown is the greatest among herbs and becometh a tree.»
