The March 12, 2015 issue
of Nature magazine contains an essay — not an original thesis, rather a summation — by two English geographers entitled «Defining the Anthropocene,» the subject
of which is whether (and starting when)
human activity has so altered the global environment as to constitute a new geologic
age: the Anthropocene Age, as successor to the 11,000 - year Holocene Epoch that is itself part of the larger 2.6 million year - old Quaternary Period (or Great Ice Ag

I have always found it very strange that these who call themselves successors
of the apostles, I mean some poor men — preachers
of humility and repentance — should possess
great wealth, wallow in luxery, and fill posts more proper to satisfy the vanity

of human life and on the quest for salvation.

Such forms

Our
age is in need
of a
great philosopher; one who can thread his way, step by step, through the intricate labyrinth
of reasoning into which scientists have been led, eyes riveted to earth, by the desire to improve our
human lot, the desire to destroy life, or mere common curiosity; one who can keep his mind, at the same time, open to the metaphysical implications
of all he learns, and at last put the wholecorpus
of our knowledge together in one grand synthesis.

In animal models, exposure to cigarette smoke or nicotine during fetal development alters the expression
of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in areas
of the brainstem important for autonomic function, 28 alters the neuronal excitability
of neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarius (a brainstem region important for sensory integration), 29 and alters fetal autonomic activity and medullary neurotransmitter receptors.30 In
human infants, there are strong associations between nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and serotonin receptors in the brainstem during development.31 Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke attenuates recovery from hypoxia in preterm infants, 32 decreases heart rate variability in preterm33 and term34 infants, and abolishes the normal relationship between heart rate and gestational
age at birth.33 Moreover, infants
of smoking mothers exhibit impaired arousal patterns to trigeminal stimulation in proportion to urinary cotinine levels.35 It is important to note also that prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke alters the normal programming
of cardiovascular reflexes such that there is a
greater - than - expected increase in blood pressure and heart rate in response to breathing 4 % carbon dioxide or a 60 ° head - up tilt.36 These changes in autonomic function, arousal, and cardiovascular reflexes might all increase an infant's vulnerability to SIDS.
Meanwhile, recent
human studies indicate that
aging is associated with an increase in somatic mutations in the hematopoietic system, which gives rise to blood cells; these mutations provide a competitive growth advantage to the mutant hematopoietic cells, allowing for their clonal expansion — a process that has been shown to be associated with a
greater incidence
of atherosclerosis, though specifically how remains unclear.

Health improvement (allowing to post - pone / escape the diseases and thus live, healthier / disease - free longer, but not above

aging in «unhealthy» (as seen from elders who are «healthy enough» who show much damage), it's just «tolerable / liveable» enough (in terms
of damage accumulating) that it does not affect their quality
of life (enough yet), that is «healthy
aging»: ApoptoSENS - Clearing Senescent Cells (this will have
great impact to reduce diseases, the largest one, since it's all inflammation fueled by the inflammation secretory phenotype (SASP)
of these senescent cells) AmyloSENS - Dissolving the Plaques (this will allow
humans to evade Alzheimer's, Parkinsons and general brain degenerescence, allowing quite a boost; making people much more easily reach the big 100 - since the brain is causal to how long we live; keeping brain amyloid - free and keeping our memories / neuron sharp / means longer LongTerm Potentiation - means longer brain function means longer heavy brain mass (gray matter / white matter retention seen in «sharp - witted» Centenarians who show are younger brain for their
age), and both are correlated to MLSP).
Telomere length predicts both cellular health and disease in rodent models and
humans.8 Shorter telomeres predict onset
of cardiometabolic diseases
of aging.9 Chronic stress is associated with higher inflammation, shorter telomeres, and lower activity levels
of telomerase, the cellular enzyme that elongates telomeric DNA.10, 11 Levels
of amyloid beta (Aβ) proteins circulating in the blood appear to be stress - related in rodent models12 and may be affected by stress reduction, and
greater Aβ42 / Aβ40 ratios are associated with lower risk
of dementia.13
By the end

Science has helped demonstrate that we have entered the Anthropocene, an
age in which
humans, through our «
great acceleration,» have become a planetary force and left a signature — in fallout, carbon, plastic and more — that could mark the dawn
of a geological
age of our own making (if not yet our own design).
Candidates for the starting point for the
age of humans range from the dawn
of agriculture to the
age of plastics and fallout and the «
Great Acceleration»
of greenhouse gas growth and other environmental impacts.
Clearly
human activities can affect climates — we all grew up learning that the desertification
of much
of North Africa was due to goats, and we know that some local climates are determined by
human activities in the region — but
human activity is unlikely to have caused the Viking period warming, the
great cooling after 1300, the Little Ice
Age, and such; and the warming beginning in 1800 or so is very unlikely to have been caused by
human activities.
It is also about the increasingly trendy idea
of the Anthropocene: the suggestion that
human impact on the planet is so
great that we have, collectively become not just a geological force but the dominant one in the modern
age, and that our impacts will be seen in the geological record for eons to come.
The evidence
of the size
of climate zone shifts and the associated changes in atmospheric heights from Mediaeval Warm Period to Little Ice
Age to date suggests that the natural solar and ocean induced changes in the effective radiating height are far
greater than anything that could be achieved by
human emissions.
Still, the
human contribution to climate was presumed to be far outweighed by the
great cycles
of ice
ages revealed in fossil and geological records.
