Despite the present pacing issues and sometimes generic storytelling, captain underpants is a
great children's
film along with quality entertainment
for adults as well.
Some things that probably factor into the industry's disagreement: Peter Jackson adapted books fifty years old and respected as
great literature, the Potter books were being written alongside the first movies; Lord of the Rings centered on
adult characters and played to a wider audience with PG - 13 ratings, the first Potter movies were PG, skewed younger, and starred kids (though anyone can see the
films matured and so did the fans, many already wrote the series off); finally, where Jackson provided one distinct vision and a cast of respected performers, Potter had a rotating director roster (all of them secondary to Rowling) and limited opportunities
for its accomplished actors, giving the brunt of the work to the three kids and spectacle.

It is darker than most of the Harry Potter
films, which were
great for both
adults and children.
The
film is made
for kids but it is filled with tons of
great adult jokes that makes this enjoyable to watch with your kids.
The theater pub was founded in 1997, and claims to have provided a «fun, unique atmosphere
for adults 21 and over to enjoy
great films, food and drink» since they opened to the public nearly twenty years ago.
Vaughan and his screenwriting partner, Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class, Miss Peregrine's Home
for Peculiar Children, Kick - Ass), relegate Eggsy's former training partner and fellow Kingsman, Roxanne «Roxy» Morton (Sophie Cookson), to an early
film cameo, the «guy in the chair» who helps Eggsy navigate one of the
greatest challenges of his
adult life: a meet - and - greet, sit - down dinner with Princess Tilde's imposing parental units, the King and Queen of Sweden.
I still think it's a
film worth watching, if
for no other reason than to enjoy 60 minutes of
great cinema, and to enjoy some fine performances by the lead
adult and the two leading children.
We went on to discuss the hazards of shipping; how the festival will be honoring the late,
great film preservationist, David Shepherd with a series of enchanting short
films, including hand - painted examples from Georges Meliès (see left) that are suitable
for children as well as
adults; why Ernst Lubitsch's THE DOLL also appeals to both.
But the relegation of the cinéma d'auteur to the level of a minor genre to be not so benignly tolerated in the supposedly
greater adult realities of the
film world at the Cannes
Film Festival, once a true home
for the cinema, truly stings.
Hoffman delivers a deadpan monologue in that deep, rich voice of his in which he lays out his strategy
for the president; it's simultaneously hilarious and frightening, and a
great example of how excellent supporting casting helps elevate a
film like this beyond the young -
adult genre.
The other key element that makes this
film great to see is that it doesn't talk down to children and has an interesting story
for the
adults that have to take them s audience members of all ages can enjoy the movie.
In this time of dark fantasy
films («Snow White and the Huntsman,» «Prometheus «-RRB-, violent war dramas («
For Greater Glory «-RRB- and bland
adult comedies («What to Expect When You're Expecting,» «Lola Versus «-RRB-, it's refreshing to see a fun, colorful movie the whole family can enjoy together.
Though the fantasy
film sounds
great in theory, the trailers don't look very promising, particularly in regards to its uneven tone (is it
for children,
adults or the whole family?)
They're
great in their supporting roles, but the
film's real surprise comes from Gilman and Hayward, who capture all the innocence of kids playing
adults from a time before modern entertainment ruined the magic of childhood
for most of them.
