The 5
Gyres Institute, a leading research organization focusing on plastic pollution in the world's
oceans, recently discovered microbeads on a research expedition in the
Great Lakes, where they found as many as 466,000 microplastics per square kilometer.
These range from few years (Beaufort
gyre 4 years, Circumpolar current 8 years, Indian
ocean gyre 10 years, N. Atlantic subpolar
gyre 20 years etc.) up to above 100 years for some of the Pacific
gyres, and finally the
great ocean conveyor belt estimated at ~ 1600 years.
The largest of these patches, approximately as large as Texas, is located in the Northern Pacific
Ocean, named the Pacific
Gyre or The
Great Garbage Patch.

In this paper, it is shown that coherent large - scale low - frequency variabilities in the North Atlantic
Ocean — that is, the variations of thermohaline circulation, deep western boundary current, northern recirculation
gyre, and Gulf Stream path — are associated with high - latitude oceanic
Great Salinity Anomaly events.
