Despite claims that further European trade mark reforms, which apply from 1st October, now present greater opportunities to businesses seeking to register «non-traditional» trade marks at the European Intellectual Property Office; there is some doubt as to whether the registration process will be as straightforward as for other traditional marks and whether enforcement will be practical in view of the seemingly narrow scope of protection granted.

Recent reforms have seen greater emphasis on equal opportunities for disabled workers, but there is still less legal protection of the rights of disabled workers than in some western countries.

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs has said that another aim of the reforms is to provide «greater economic opportunities (business investment and home ownership) as a result of resolution of land tenure and land administration issues».
