Grid penalties have become the biggest joke in F1 in recent times and in 2018, the
system for working out the
grid will change yet again.
YouTube user Chain Bear F1 has created a video to explain how
grid penalties are applied, showing the old
systems and how things will work this coming season.
But it also mocks the imposed engine limit and
penalty system, and could create a scenario in which half the
grid is taking
penalties for freedom of development, leaving the few teams happy with their output to continue, with no choice offered to the lesser financed teams.
It might not be so bad, but the news comes in the wake of the Italian Grand Prix, where 150 places worth of
grid penalties made a bit of a mockery of the sport, leading to many teams and even Ross Brawn calling for an overhaul of the
system.
After a slightly farcical Monza weekend in which 150 places worth of
grid penalties were split among nine drivers, F1 chiefs said that the whole
system of punishment for penalising component changes needed overhauling.

grid, it is safe to say that something is very, very wrong with today's
system.
