It said the most successful schools had identified this and trained teaching assistants how to assist pupils in different ways — such as working with
small groups of pupils.
Some of this evidence seems contradictory, however, and this is because retention policies have dramatically different effects on
different groups of pupils.
The tables show how well a particular
year group of pupils at a given school has performed in tests or exams.
Peer observations, focused on the new approach and its effect on the
target groups of pupils, become a helpful and welcome way of learning rather than part of an imposed accountability system.
