Guarding litters is one of the top
reasons for bites from female
dogs.
This is a breed that was bred solely to
guard, therefore it is their natural instincts, they are not a herding breed unlike most other large breeds that are
for some
reason used as
guard dogs.
If your main
reason for getting a
dog is
for protection /
guard work, perhaps a Rottweiler, German Shephard, or a Doberman Pinscher would suit you better.
CCI is moving away from using German shepherds
for two
reasons: first, a lot of the public view (and fear) German shepherds as «police» or «
guard»
dogs, and second, German shepherds bond very strongly to people and the program is difficult on them because first they form a strong bond to their puppy raiser, then to their trainer when they go back to CCI, and then to their eventual handicapped owner.
For this
reason, they actually make very poor
guard dogs, although the will bark at people passing by on the street if they are in the yard or a kennel.
It is
for these
reasons that they are commonly used as
guard dogs, although their loyalty and affection make them ideal family
dogs as well.

After all, this basic notion is the
reason for thousands of years of selective breeding in the
dog world — it's why we've been able to develop specific lines of
dogs who are consistently driven to retrieve things, herd sheep,
guard our homes, or track rabbits without any formal training at all.
For this
reason, I don't recommend them if you want a
guard dog, as they are likely to greet an intruder with a wag of the tail rather than a menacing bark.
