of physicians» orders, IV admixture preparation, etc.)(2) Defined clinical activities to optimize therapeutic outcomes under the
guidance of the departmental and corporate directives (which include active communication with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff about the need to clarify and / or change an order along with documentation
of intervention outcomes)(3) Educational activities with
pharmacist colleagues and other health care professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, etc.) to maintain and advance clinical competencies (4) Supervise and provide oversight and direction
of technicians» drug preparation and distribution activities to assure safe and expedient provision
of pharmaceutical care to patients and staff.
Additional training is available to qualified Pharmacy Technicians and can include accuracy checking
of dispensed prescriptions (though there is no legal requirement that a person be qualified as a pharmacy technician before undertaking an accuracy checking course), Medicines Management (Hospital or PCT), participation in the running
of hospital clinics such as anticoagulant clinics, dosing Warfarin patients under dose banding
guidance, [citation needed] or other higher duties traditionally done by
Pharmacists.
The
pharmacist and more experienced pharmacy technicians provide mentoring and
guidance, evaluating the trainee's performance on a regular basis and verifying the accuracy
of his or her work.
While these techs may be able to dispense prescription drugs, they must do so under the
guidance of a licensed
pharmacist.
