Avoiding eye contact is a hallmark of this developmental disorder, and researchers have looked for the
cause in the brain's fusiform
gyrus region, active in face recognition.
Damage to the fusiform
gyrus of the temporal lobe, for example,
causes face blindness, and stimulation of this same area
causes people to see faces spontaneously.
