The researchers, led by Dr Steven Holloway from the University of Melbourne Faculty of Veterinary Science, have taken DNA from 100 dogs in the quest to determine what in their genetic makeup causes diseases such as diabetes, granulomatous meningitis (similar to multiple sclerosis) and immune - mediated
haemolytic anemia, a condition which causes the immune system to attack red
blood cells.
Dogs that are affected by
haemolytic anaemia will have their red
blood cells burst during circulation, which will show up in your dog's vomit or urine.
• Onions, Garlic & Chives: These all contain thiosulphate which can lead to stomach upset, and prolonged exposure can cause
haemolytic anemia (damage red
blood cells).
Onions contain disulphides (or thiosulphate) that destroy red
blood cells in the cat, causing a form of anaemia called Heinz body anaemia (a
haemolytic or red - cell - bursting anaemia).
Onion toxicity results in
haemolytic anaemia, where the red
blood cells burst while circulating in its body.
