hand and is light years ahead
of its rivals.
While the rear curve isn't as dramatic nor ergonomic as it was in the past, we're happy to see this bring the replacement
of practically awkward slim side
edges with larger curved side continuations
of aluminum, which makes the
phone easier to grip, especially with a single
hand.
The back
of the 10 features the same aluminum body HTC pioneered years ago, only now with tapered
edges the company describes as «chamfered,» making the
phone slightly easier to hold, though it still slid out
of my
hand a number
of times, perhaps more so that the M9.
Above that is the volume rocker, at the bottom
edge of the
phone is a USB - C charging port, 3.5 mm headphone jack and a speaker grille (which can be easily covered during one -
handed use, unfortunately).
The bottom
edges of the
phone feel nice in the
hand as they're rounded off; however this highlights the fact that the top
edges are squared and quite sharp, and don't feel — or look — good at all.
That's offset by a metal design, although only around the
edge of the
phone - and Samsung has gone once again for a light weight, rather than making it feel weighty and ergonomic in the
hand.
The curved
edges and sides
of the device make for a somewhat better handling experience, but the metal body is quite slippery, so using this rather large
phone with one
hand isn't the easiest.
The 3.5 mm headset connector is neatly placed on top
of the
phone, a volume rocker is on the left and the main power switch and micro USB slot are both on the right -
hand edge.
Having such a sharply curved
edge on just one side
of the
phone introduces some interesting usability questions, particularly for people who hold the
phone in their left
hand.
The
edges of the
phone have a slight chamfer that catches light well, but offers little towards making the
phone comfortable to hold with one
hand.
If you're someone who holds a
phone in their right
hand, the position
of the volume keys on the left is quite uncomfortable, and, as they're almost flush with the
edge of the
phone, they are difficult to locate at the best
of times.
Button and port placement is the same as well, with the volume rocker and pleasingly textured power / sleep button located two - thirds
of the way up the right -
hand edge, and the headphone jack and microUSB port situated on the top and bottom
edge of the
phone respectively.
The
phone is shaped to feel smaller than it looks, with subtly curved
edges and slightly sharpened corners that nestle perfectly into the palm
of your
hand.
The way the back curves to sit perfectly in your
hand; the way the glass face spills over the sides and continues the lines
of the polished, chamfered
edges; the way the micro-drilled holes that cover the speakers give the
phone personality; all these fantastic design elements combine to create a truly unique and gorgeous smartphone.
The curvature fits into the
hand a lot better than the straight
edges of the P8 and to be honest I have used this
phone for 2 weeks, and it hasn't slipped out
of hands even once.
Sony sure found a way to pack as much as possible on the bottom half
of one
edge of the
phone, but that effort proved to be worthless, at least if you have big
hands.
The rounded
edges and curved corners help the
phone feel comfy in the
hand, and its overall size
of 111 x 47.5 x 11 mm and its weight
of 100g mean it's easy to drop into all but the very smallest
of pockets.
The Optimus G also has a stainless steel trim that runs around the
edge of the
phone and really pulls the design together.It feels nice too, with rounded corners, so it sits comfortably in the
hand.
But I still find myself adjusting the
phone in the middle because sometimes I place the
phone a little closer to the
edge, so be mindful
of that or else you'll have an uncharged
phone in your
hands.
The
phone maker claims that because it is using plastic - OLED, the
edges of its device's display can be curved ensuring a more ergonomic grip and better feel in the
hand.
Rather like the iPhone, you can set your
phone to «Silent» or «Ring» with a mechanical switch located on the left
hand edge of the handset.
Simply double - press the power button on the right
hand edge of the device to jump straight to the
phone's excellent dual - camera setup.
The
edges of the device are rounded, there is not one hard angle on the main body
of the
phone, which makes it feel really good in the
hand.
