29 November 2006 — Figures released today courtesy of the UK's leading independent music, video and software performance and sales tracking company, Chart Track, show Nintendo UK is now the 2006 UK market leader in video games hardware surpassing all competition in both the home console and
handheld console markets.
Where Nintendo have always been market leaders is in
the handheld console market.
In a console market that is absolutely dominated by the likes of Sony, Microsoft, and to an extent Nintendo (which still dominates
the handheld console market with its Nintendo 3DS), it would be unwise for the company to attempt to rebrand itself as a console maker.
Created by our friends over at MBAOnline.com, this new infographic details some of Nintendo's greatest achievements since entering the home console business back in the 1980s, and subsequently dominating
the handheld console market too.
The rise of smartphones and then tablets ate into the traditional
handheld console market, and the online gaming explosion drew more and more gamers to Sony and Microsoft platforms.

It turns out that the very traits that made the series's appeal seem limited on paper have allowed it to thrive, even as the mobile - phone
market has cannibalized the
handheld consoles that have historically hosted them.
This is on top of the fact that Americans continue to buy Nintendo home
consoles more than their Japanese counterparts, while Japan has been buying more
handhelds than any other region (a first for Nintendo since the Game Boy through the DS all had Japan trailing - the
handheld market is shrinking worldwide, but in Japan it's not as bad as Western
markets since the 3DS has already outsold the GBA there while in America it's still less than 50 % of GBA sales after almost 6 years).
It was a conventional follow - up to the Wii but not a conventional
console for the timing of its release and unlike the
handheld market the competition is really fierce.

market lost its taste for home

The reason is simple, Nintendo are not doing well in the traditional
console market with both their home
console and
handheld device and this means that they have no new revenue stream to fall back on should traditional revenue dry up.
Many core and casual gamers now have a smartphone which can play games and these devices have enough casual and core content that the
market for a dedicated
handheld console has rapidly declined over the past few years.
In light of this Gameboy milestone, we thought we'd take a look at some of the
handhelds that came to
market before Gameboy brought interchangeable game cartridges to portable gaming
consoles.
If Nintendo wants to be sure no one steps into the
handheld market and takes over the way Playstation did the
console market at one point, they know to keep the price low.

console to date - and competition has never been greater in the fierce
handheld market.
