In this flight, Windows 10 is introducing a new
handwriting panel with more gestures, editing features, and support for emoji.
New Text Input Canvas: We've introduced an updated experience
for handwriting panel recognition optimized for short text entry.
Thanks everyone who's shared feedback about our
Embedded Handwriting Panel so far — we're making a change such that if you clean install, reset your PC, or upgrade straight to this build from the Fall Creators Update this experience will be turned off by default.
This embedded experience will * only * appear if you're using a pen to tap the text field — if you use touch, the
existing handwriting panel will be invoked.
The improvements include two major elements: navigation, including using the pen or stylus to select and scroll text; and better interpretation of inked words as text, via a more accurate and
responsive handwriting panel.
Input improvements include situations where incorrect characters were being inputted when using a full touch keyboard layout or a couple
of handwriting panel options, and the improvements also addressed problems with certain non-Western typesets.
Introduced in today's Build is the new XAML -
based handwriting panel, which turns your handwriting into text directly on the screen.
We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to insert words into certain text fields in Microsoft Edge when using
the handwriting panel to enter text.
It also adds new functions for
the handwriting panel.
We fixed an issue that resulted in words sometimes being input twice when using
the handwriting panel in certain websites using Microsoft Edge.
A New Commit Gesture: We've added a new gesture so you can automatically commit your text and clear out the text in
the handwriting panel.
ntroducing the Embedded
Handwriting Panel: In this Insider release, users get to experience a new way to handwrite on Windows.
The buttons in
the handwriting panel are collapsed by default — tap the button with the ellipsis to expand them.
Go to Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink > «Change the font of the handwriting experience», select your preferred font from the dropdown, then write in
the handwriting panel to see your chosen font.
Personalize
the handwriting panel: In this release you can now change the font that your handwriting converts to in the handwriting panel!
Next select Touch keyboard and
handwriting panel.
Now, text scrawled into
the handwriting panel will be converted to typed text as you write.
For one thing, Microsoft overhauled
its handwriting panel, the pen - based alternative to typing in text either via a physical or soft keyboard.
We fixed an issue from recent flights where the touch keyboard and
handwriting panel would unexpectedly appear sometimes.
We fixed an issue where if the text in
the handwriting panel shifted while you were inking, it could result in an unintentional ink stroke across the panel.
It also disables finger inking by default — although you can change this setting, if you like — which eliminates the chance that you'll bump
the handwriting panel with your finger while writing with a pen and mess things up.
The handwriting panel available in Windows 10's touch keyboard has seen a large number of improvements, too.
When you fill
the handwriting panel and lift your pen off the screen, the text you wrote will move to the left so you always have more space to write.
What this means is that
the handwriting panel is now embedded into the text field and appears inline as opposed to appearing where the touch keyboard would as in previous versions of Windows.
The handwriting panel offers easier access to emoji and symbols with two new buttons, making it easier to insert these characters.
Or you can configure your PC to display
a handwriting panel for ink input, instead of displaying a «soft» keyboard, when the keyboard is detached.
We fixed an issue where handwriting text candidates might stop working properly after using strikethrough to erase words written in
the handwriting panel.
For example, the «Show
the handwriting panel when note in tablet mode and there's no keyboard attached» option makes it easier to access the handwriting input panel on tablets with a stylus.
When you're using a tablet device with no physical keyboard attached and you're in desktop mode (not «tablet mode»), Windows will automatically open
the handwriting panel.
In addition to
the handwriting panel, any app that uses the Ink Analysis APIs will now be able to recognize ink in these new languages without any additional changes!
As a reminder, if you'd like to use
the handwriting panel with touch, you'll need to enable it — it's an option in Pen & Windows Ink Settings.
Reducing the chance of palm rejection: We've added a new setting in Pen & Windows Ink Settings so finger inking needs to be explicitly enabled — this will help avoid inadvertent ink being drawn on
the handwriting panel as you're writing with your pen.
Introducing the Embedded
Handwriting Panel: In this Insider release, users get to experience a new way to handwrite on Windows.
If something gets misrecognized or you'd like to edit what you've written, the same gestures that are available through
the handwriting panel are also available, like the new insert gesture we added recently.
Simply tap the microphone button in the top left corner of the touch keyboard or
handwriting panel, or press the new dictation hotkey Win + H to start dictating.
And
the handwriting panel adds two new buttons to input emoji and symbols more easily.
And the processed text in
the handwriting panel now uses Windows 10's Segoe UI font.
Build 17035 also brings a number of input improvements using the touch keyboard,
handwriting panel, and hardware keyboard.
The handwriting panel now has new animations, changes the button layout, and it's been improved to recognize corrections better.
For example, tapping the address on Microsoft Edge using the pen will bring up
the handwriting panel to write with digital ink.
Because
the handwriting panel is part of the touch keyboard experience, you'll also find the same Acrylic implementation when using the panel.
Alongside with the new Fluent Design implementations in Action Center, touch keyboard, and
handwriting panel, starting with build 17025, Windows 10 soften the light press effect part of the Reveal highlight element and enable Reveal highlight for Clock and Calendar flyout.
The handwriting experience is also receiving some improvements, including the ability to erase words in
the handwriting panel using the back of your pen.
