If successful, it could give researchers an unprecedented glimpse of what
happens around black holes and within the hearts of stars.
What is
happening around black holes?
Not exact matches
The law of gravity applies to objects on earth and is pretty immutable, however the theory of gravity applies to cosmic objects and theoretically what
happens to an object
around a large star, or a
black hole, or when two galaxies collide, etc....
The project continues to detect waves from similar events, offering new and incredible details about what
happens when these
black holes crash and warp the spacetime
around them.
But
around a supermassive
black hole, objects zip
around so fast that crashes would
happen at up to 1000 kilometres per second, pulverising the colliding objects.
A
black hole arises when the warping
around a point grows so severe that that spacetime in the area becomes like a funnel so steep that nothing can climb back out, as may
happen when a massive star collapses.
This particular energy range offers astronomers a detailed look at what is
happening near the event horizon, the region
around a
black hole from which light can no longer escape gravity's grasp.
Now we know quasars are crazy because of violence
happening around distant supermassive
black holes.
The feeding process is somewhat similar to what
happens around supermassive
black holes, but isn't as big and messy.
Kip Thorne worked out the mathematics of what
happens to the accretion disc, and found that the intense gravity warps the disc
around the
black hole, creating the spectacular halo that is one of the movie's visual highlights.
«Supermassive
black holes have a lot of influence on the stars
around them and the growth and evolution of the galaxy, so understanding more about them and what
happens when they merge with one another could be important for our understanding for the universe,» Taylor said.
