In fact, her efforts
and success at building an
author platform were a huge factor in getting her noticed
and approached by an agent, as well as earning her the respect of many fellow indie
authors and many, many
happy readers.
There are more than enough
readers haunting Kindle to make me a very
happy (
and prosperous)
author.
As a
reader myself, am I
happy to purchase ebooks from unknown
authors and get highly disappointed more often than not?
Readers are looking for stories
and characters that they can empathize with
and authors are more than
happy to fill that need.
In the context of publishing, it means developing a body of quality titles that an imprint or house (or a niche driven community) can be proud of, written by
authors that the publisher
and readers are
happy to claim as their own.
If
readers can accept that it's important that
authors and publishers profit from the sale of a book since it's their profit that allows them to continue this great service of providing books, then everyone can be
happy.
But most
authors will deliberately avoid talking about sales or marketing
and say things like «it's not about the money, I'm
happy if just one
reader enjoys my book!»
Then they get picked up by a publishing house,
and suddenly that
author's
readers aren't
happy their work anymore.
I think most
readers are
happy to pony up a - fair - amount of pocket cash (whatever that means to the individual
reader) to go directly into the
author's pocket in exchange for a good read,
and another,
and another.
Your historical novel should be set in Italy, for example, this detail inspires interest in Italian
readers and the owners of the library will be very
happy to buy copies of a book written by a foreign
author who wrote about a topic they love.
The publisher chalks up another sale, the book store can push high - interest product without losing valuable shelf space to stagnant inventory, the
author comes away with another
happy member of his fan base,
and the
reader gets a great book.

I believe this initial assessment of the whole book, rather than reading only a chapter or two, is the best way to see how the
author sustains the narrative arc — creates the premise, develops the action, resolves the problem —
and brings the
reader to some kind of satisfying personal experience, an emotional landing place, whether it's inspiring,
happy, tragic or just plain informative.
Fourthly,
readers are willing to,
and happy to, pay
authors for their work.
Rather than paying exorbitant prices for advertising (which may not be effective in the new media world anyway), you enlist a team of
happy readers who love your eBook
and offer to help spread the word by talking to friends, tweeting about the book

Given the advantages inherent in electronic media, I would think there's a way to imporve on that that both
authors and readers would be
happy with.
Amazon likes to present it as «We're keeping prices low to benefit
readers,»
and I know a number of
authors who are
happy with CreateSpace.
For a well - established
author, if the
readers are
happy and satisfied, if they feel they have gotten their money's worth, even at 7.99, then there's nothing morally wrong with pricing it there for something you have poured your soul into for such a long time.
For self - publishing
authors, we could do a flawless book launch
and sell thousands of copies, but if the
readers aren't
happy, negative reviews will build up on our Amazon page
and make the book increasing difficult to sell (although, I've seen loads of books with lots of negative book reviews that continue to sell well.
Given that
readers are the only people paying for books you'd think Publishers
and Authors would all focus on making customers
happy — getting them the best quality books at the lowest prices, innovating
and improving things, cutting costs
and being more efficient.
There is no good
and elegant solution to this problem
and Amazon devised a solution which is going to make publishers
happy, going to make
authors happy, going to make easily - confused
readers happy,
and will only piss off those who already have an investment in ebooks,
and it seems like they are working on a transition path for those as well.

Great time to be an Indie
author, especially because they can make, market
and sell ebooks at no cost, bypass a publisher, sell an ebook for $ 1.99, have a decent royalty
and a very
happy consumer in the
reader, plus it's environmental.
But that's a minor gripe,
and I am
happy to trade the occasional (
and diminishing) lack of recognition as a serious
author for the unbelievable support that I get from
readers.
I read a lot of debut
and mid-list
authors and am
happy to help
readers make informed decisions on what to buy.
